Talent prerequisites

By Fenrisnorth, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Just came up in a game, if a marine attacks an opponent via unarmed strike, and his opponent has a weapon. does he get the -20 to hit? I say no, as Marines have Unarmed Master. Opponent says yes, as it is Unarmed Warriors, a Prerequisite for Unarmed Master, that makes the user's unarmed attacks ignore that penalty.

Does having a talent granted for free give you the benefits of its prerequisites that you are not specifically given at character creation?

All SpaceMarines are unarmed masters, and such are also Unarmed Warriors. Pg 108 it talks briefly about talent prerequisites. The only reason Unarmed Warriors is in the book is to explain the prereq, and for completness of the previous games/DH and RT.

The Errata state Marines have Unarmed Warrior and Master...

D'oh, so it does, tyvm.

Ok... But what about the starting talents?

Does a character still benefits from any starting talent (or space marine's upgrades, like genetic alterations) that he doent match the requisites?

Is a starting talent have an AG 35 requisite an the character have only 30, for example.

No benefits, sorry. These are pre-built in and prerequisites only apply to the normally acquired skills. They even don't apply to Deeds and Distinctions.

Oh! Then, you mean "There are still benefits", right?

I may ignore any requisites for "marine born talents", right?

That's right. For those available to you at Character Creation such as Unarmed Master, Bulging Biceps etc, you do not need to meed the requirements to get them. They're part of the package. For anything else you need to buy with xp, you will need to meet the requirements. Hope this helps.

This helped a lot! really thanks!

P.S. I confess i am a little disapointed. I think would be cool if these taleds were locked until the character meets the requisites. but its ok. The game system is not a big deal anyway... : )

Astartes are that good. In fact they have omitted a number of skills that every Astartes normally would have. Pilot(Personal), Exotic Weapons (Sniper Rifle), probably also Drive(Skimmers) and Demolitions.

But noone is stopping you from house ruling it all differently. :)
