Why can my 'No Librarians Allowed' Dread use Psy-Level and other psychic talents/skills?

By H.B.M.C., in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hi all,

I was disappointed to see that one of the restrictions when it comes to becoming a Deathwatch Dreadnought was that it does not allow you to become one if you are a Librarian. This strikes me as odd - there are Librarian Dreads in the fluff, and why wouldn't the Deathwatch put a mortally wounded Libarian in a Dread Sarcophagus if they knew it was of benefit?

Anyway, that aside, the rules that determine what skills and talents a Dread can use include a whole wholst of talents that require the pilot to be a psyker (Psyniscience, Favoured by the Warp and even Psy-Level are there). This makes me think that the restriction on 'No Libbys!' for the Dread was either a mistake or an afterthought added after the other rules were written.

Thoughts?

I don't have RoB yet, but my gut says it was an addendum for balance. Off hand and what little I know from the forums regarding the dread's power level, it seems to me that adding spy powers to it goes from over the top to downright crazy happy.gif

But again, no book, so take this with a grain of salt.

It's easier to include them now than later.

Do other chapters use Libby Dreds other than GK's, BA's and successors?

My guess is that a Libby Dred would require a whole set of additional rules to run beyond what the Dreds already have.

Hmmm... a Blood Angel Librarian Dreadnough flying around on the Wings of Sanguinous...

Everything in the Dreadnought's list of allowed skills and talents seems to indicate that Librarians would have no problem becoming Dreadnoughts despite the one line restriction. However, once interred in the Dreadnought frame, they are limited to the Dreadnought Advances, which means their psychic powers never advance past what they were when they become Dreads.

I wouldn't even mind if they put something like "Librarian Dreads halve their Psy-Rating, rounding up, when casting all powers" or "May not use the 'Push' Action".

That would do.

It is most likely a game balance decision as opposed to a lore/fluff one. A Dreadnought using Force Dome and Might of the Ancients would be hard to balance out.

Well its a good thing Space Wolves don't have librarians. Cause those Rune Priests are sure gamma love all the extra armor!

Honestly it allows the team to branch that way in later additions without to much back tracking, just forget that one line and "Look!" your ready to go.
