Explosive Damage + Unrelenting Devistation

By SilentBob367, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hey guys first post. I'm a new player playing a Devastator Marine (though I prefer Long Fang) in my first campaign. I have read a lot about the correct application of Unrelenting Devastation in the different situations where comes into play, like the different discussions online, and the FAQ.

My question is that in the Hordes Section under Damaging a Horde it says "Weapons that inflict Explosive Damage (X) gain a bonus against Hordes, and count as having inflicted on additional hit."

While Unrelenting Devastation says "Devastator inflicts 1 extra point of damage to a Horde's Magnitude for every hit."

Currently I'm equiped with a standard Heavy Bolter, which inficts X damage, so if I'm in squad mode benefiting from Unrelenting Devastation, do I double that additional hit to two?

For example, I hit 7 times with my bolter, plus my additional 1 for using a X damage type weapon, then double that all to 16? Or is it just one additional hit not doubled, so 15?

Thanks Guys!

The one additional hit for 'X' weapons is not daoubled, nor is any additional hit from the 'death is joy' armour history.

Generally speaking, in the 40K RPG line, additions are made after doubling. So if you've got something that doubles hits and three things that add hits, the formula would look like Total Hits = ((H x2) + 1 + 1 + 1)... where 'H' equals the initial amount of hits. You double it, then add the three extra hits.

Well, that is not clear still because we're not dealing with mixed multiplications and additions here. Instead we have a two step process:

1. Calculate the effective number of hits.
2. Translate the number of hits into horde magnitude damage.

Further more it's even totally unimportant in which order you do it: if, for example due to Metal Storm each hit causes 2 mag damage then you have either:
(assuming 3 DoS): (4 hits + 1hit)*2 = 10 mag damage
or:
4hits*2 + 1hit*2 = 10 mag damage

The main point being that each hit causes a fixed amount of mag damage.

See that what I oriinally figured... as there is very specific terms being used, as in all "hits" do double damage to a horde magnitude, dosen't say where those hits have to come from. I hoped the FAQ would solve that up right quick, but nothing mentioned there what so ever.

I wasn't sure which, and could come up with arguments for either way, so I figured I would attempt to get the interwebz thoughts on the idea.

Thanks again.

Personally I think RAW is very clear. Whether it's the same as RAI I don't know.

You should probably check the Errata. I think it drastically clears the water, as it were.

Yep, the errata states that the extra hit from Explosive damage is done after all other hits are calculated.
