Charging a horde

By MikeN, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

If a marine charges into melee combat against a horde could he still make 'charge' actions vs the horde on following turns?

The horde is treated as a single creature so would the charge only count for the initial melee attack of the marine or could he continue 'charging' through the horde?

I think this question also leads to 'How much area does a horde occupy'. And again the magnitude does not have the final say about the intendend number of participants.

If the horde has a big magnitude because it resembles a mob then I would argue: no.

But if you argue that a hight magnitude score shall represent a well trained little elite unit, then one might argue: yes.

But in the end I would rather have a problem with multiple charging actions. For me, the bonus comes from the momentum you have after running several metres. Now if you wade through a horde you would have problems to build up the same momentum.

But that is just my point of view.

I'd agree that for a marine on foot the charge bonus is their initial momentum as they hurl themselves into combat. They probably couldn't keep barrelling through a mob because they'd eventually get swarmed as the horde 'piles on'. But what about an assault marine with a jump pack? particularly one with 'wrathful descent' which gives the extra damage vs hordes on a charge?

I've ruled it that the character still has to disengage from the fight before he can charge back in, even if they have a jump pack - against a horde, moments after your impact (which, in the case of the Black Templars Assault Marine my cousin plays, tends to leave a big hole, and sometimes a crater), you've suddenly got a pile of enemies pressing down on you, making it difficult to move away. Certainly, that's the way it played out this week, as he descended brutally upon a swarm of Hormagaunts, cleared away a load of them, and then got mobbed as they retaliated.

That is why the Blood Angel Assault Marine is insane, they would be foolish not to buy Assassins Strike....

Charge, jump out, charge again next turn...

I had a simular issue with a storm warden wanting to use thunder charge further into the mob, but I also ruled against it until he disengaged. The only situation off top of my head I can see it working is if the horde broke due to loss of moral and ran or disengaged themselves, then I would allow a charge against the remainder.

You have to move at least 4m in a straight line to get the charge bonus, right? I would have a hard time allowing that for a player currently engaged with a horde.
