42. Dark Charm threat from Surges

By Corbon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark FAQ Update Discussions

Background:

Some uncertainty exists about spending surges rolled by a hero making a Dark Charmed attack while under the control of the OL.

Question:
Q. When the OL plays Dark Charm on a hero, can he gain threat with the hero attack sourges?
A1. Yes, the attack is done under the OL control and he can spend surges to gain threat like any other monster attack. He can also spend surges through the weapon the hero is attack with of course.
A2. No, the OL can choose how to spend surges through the weapon the hero attacks with, but he cannot gain threat with this attack the way he does with monster attacks because it is done by a hero character, not a monster.

If this question is added then (please) ask for all the Dark Charm related questions together. There are currently 2 questions about it and they are not one after each other. In addition the second question also asks everything that the first question had asked.

When the OL played the Dark Charm the OL decides how to spend the surges... he can spend them as he see fit he can add damage from the weapon or gain threat.

This forum is not for questions/answers. It is only to do questions about the most typical doubts of the players to add to the FAQ. You can debate how must be done the question and which answers could been modified or added.

Anyway, the card says "the hero must make one attack that you declare", not that the OL does an attack. So it is not a precise answer. A lot of people doubt about this.

Why Dark Charm should not be a OL's attack ?

When OL use Dark Charm, he may use Aim to reroll the attack. If it should not be a OL'a attack, why can OL play Aim to support it ?

In A1, it would be interesting to note that the same surges cannot be spended on both things together. For example, if the controlled hero is attaking with a sword and roles 2 surges, the OL could force him to spend them on +1 damage or +1 threat, but not both. Yes, it's implied by the answer, but somebody could intentionally missinterpretate it.

I think so, too.It is a good idea.

This is already covered in the GLoAQ - see thread 50., item 12. Probably a cross reference to that would do, if it makes it into the FAQ.
