extra number in characteristics stat block

By GodOfLions, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

I've been looking through the DeathWatch book and have not been able to find where it explains what the extra number is in the top-left of the Strength and Toughness characteristic block means. If anyone can explain it to me and point out the page number in the DeathWatch book where it explains it, it would be very helpful.

Thanks for any help you can provide me on this

its used for unnatural characteristics, its the attribute bonus times whatever modifier, check the traits

I looked at the unnatural characteristics section as someone had mentioned that before, but it does not mention the fact it is written on the character sheet as the extra number, in the top-left of the box.

To make it more consfusing I looked at the sample characters in the Final Sanction adventure and it does not add up as far as I can tell. Where they all have a 40-47 level Strength the number in the top-left is a 10. I figured if they had an Unnatural Strength of x2 the number should be a 8 not a ten.

So can you tell me the page number where it states what the box is for or where it says put this number in the box?

Thanks for pointing me in that direction, but I'm trying to find the specific text that states what that box is for so I can be sure to explain it better or at least point to it in the book.

10 because the Power Armour gives +20, so the +2 is factored in after multiplying.

Alex

Thanks, that makes sense now.

So the number is derived from the following calculation:

(Initial Strength Bonus) x (Unnatural Characteristic Bonus) + Power Armor Bonus

That helps explain the numbers better. I can now explain it to my players better.

I still would like to know where it explicitly states that is what that number on the character sheet is for, though, a sort of this is how you fill out the character sheet, or these are the parts of the character sheet explanation.

I don't know that there is a 'this is how you fill out the sheet' - if there is one I've not found it (though I've not looked very hard). I gathered that's what the box was becaues the first box is for your 10's digit, which is your base bonus, and the little box is for your effective bonus. It is the same for NPC profiles, the highlighted section is the 10s, then the number in parens is the effective bonus.

Theoretically you could put 8 there for your 47 strength marine as that's his base bonus x 2, but then you'd forget that he has a +2 to it from PA. Though I do tend to forget about the +20 to the characteristic for characteristic tests as that's not reflected in the stat block either.
