What sort of accent would be proper to use when speaking as NPCs from the various areas?
Various accents matching the regions of the Warhammer world
Check out the 2nd ed. supplement "Sigmar's Heirs", they have suggestions for these (well, not suggesting a particular existing English accent, but hinting the sound of a province's accent).
Hi
I made this template: Grand Provinces of the Empire some time ago take a look and see if it is of any help docs.google.com/viewer
good gaming .
I go with the easy stereotypes for WFRP accents, just because they help players get fairly vivid images from characters' voices:
- Dwarfs are tough no-nonsense Northerners, with Scots burrs or broad Yorkshire drawls, just as they're always portrayed in the novels (and in the Lord of the Rings movies).
- Elves tend towards exaggerated upper-class bored accents (think Grytypype-Thynne from The Goon Show, or George Sanders).
- Orcs have broad lower-class "Sarf London" or Cockney accents, with deep, gravelly voices. Goblins and Snotlings have the same accent, but progressively higher and squeakier voices. (Snotlings should sound like someone put the record on at the wrong speed.)
- Reiklanders should sound like people from the Home Counties (or London, for those from Altdorf).
- Averlanders and other folk from more agricultural regions of the Empire have hints of the West Country.
- Middenlanders and Hochlanders sound like Geordies or Mancunians; again, the stereotypical tough folk from "oop Noorth".
- Sylvanians sound like the Eastern European mish-mash accents from bad Dracula movies.
- Marienburgers have harsh mock-Dutch accents.
- Bretonnians sound like Inspector Clouseau or other over-the-top cod-French accents.
- Kislevites sound like bad Russian accents from movies (I use the First Secretary from Firefox as my inspiration).
- No-one is American, even though my players and I all are.
Obviously I try not to do the exact same accent for every Dwarf, every Reiklander, etc., but these are my basic principles to give the universe some sort of vocal coherence.
Handy thing, that, Mal. That's actually something I've been wanting to do, so it's going to save some effort. Thanks for that.
For the Reikland I'd choose a broad Upper-Bavarian accent, except for Altdorf and it's surroundings which I'd say is Franconian (the real world Altdorf being in Franconia, which is northern Bavaria, so that fits as well). For Averland and Wissenland I'd go more Austrian, maybe a flavor of Vienna since that's the most prominent Austrian accent. For Stirland maybe Saxonian?
Hope that helps, now go take some German classes!
Suddenly I feel like Denmark is to small for many flavoured dialects

Oh, and nice seeing another Wfrp from Denmark, so few...
how about southern sealand? They have a distinctive accent as well. Bornholm too :-) But yeah, the range is limited compared to english.

On the other hand my country is drowning in dialects. greetings from Norway. Det er godt å være norsk i Danmark.
Btw anyone seen the norwegian movie the Trollhunter? (eller Trolljegeren på norsk), it was a good movie.
