Horror at Hugeldal (sings of faith adventure) question [SPOILERS]

By plutonick, in WFRP Gamemasters

Anyone played this adventure? My group is getting ready to start this tomorrow.

I briefly read it once so far, and I get the feeling that there is something missing (editing is not one of FFG's strengths).

The Sigmarite priest of Hugeldal, together with a few villagers, left Hugeldal to fight beastmen. There is no mention of his success of failure, but there are a few strange clues left in the adventure that make no sense.

1. The dwarves of the dwarf district feel ashamed that didn't help him, and also feel lucky that they didn't join a 'failed' expendition.

2. It is mentioned that the doctor knows that the tavern keeper killed the Sigmatire priest, and therefore can somehow control him.

Did I miss something? Nowhere else was it mentioned that the expendition failed. Also, HOW and WHY did the tavernkeeper kill the Priest?

Sadly havn't played it yet, nor really read it.

But you should have put it in GM section. Not a big thing, no major spoilers (and you properly warned about spoilers to), so don't think any players will "stumble" upon it and read stuff they shouldn't know. More for the sake of organising things in their proper section happy.gif

Sorry I can't help though.

Yeah, I missposted it here. I made a 'report this post' and asked to be moved to GM forum. Hopefully it will be moved soon.

I think it's simply implied that the Priest's crusade failed, as they haven't returned. Although it doesn't state how long ago they left, the set up of the adventure allows for news of the Priests failure to return to have reached Ubersreik (see the Sigmar hook) so they must have been gone some time.

I can't find what you're referring to about Gudrun killing the Priest. The secret that the Doctor knows is that the Innkeeper has been trading infected sheets with the Strigany and using them in his common room (see the Bucket of Blood section). It isn't that the Doctor is controlling the Innkeeper, they're more partners in crime. In terms of killing the priest, Hans Bauer's story implies that the Doctor guilt-tripped the Priest into doing something about the Beastmen (see Temple of Sigmar section).

I hope this helps.

Hi there. I wrote the scenario and Bertolac's reading seems pretty close to what I intended people to get from it. I also wrote a possible plot hook to the end of the scenario that some GMs might like to make pursuit of the priest's expedition into a possible future adventure (I've yet to see the final draft so that may not be in SoF).

As such the fate of the priest and his expedition is left up to the GM. If you find it an annoying loose end then just take it that the men were wiped out by the wiles of the Famine Fiend and his beastmen. That seems the easiest way to resolve the issue and if the PCs pursue the lead they might just find the site of a recent battle and the priest and his followers counted among the slain, or a sole survivor could return to Hugeldal during the course of the adventure to report the battle.

However - it is a pretty safe assumption in the Empire that if a small band of intrepid men march off into the wilds to do battle with beastmen and don't return then they have probably died. In such circumstances no news is not good news, and this is why the dwarfs of Hugeldal (as well as others) regard the expedition as a failure.

Of course though, GMs are encouraged to make up a different outcome should they wish, perhaps the priest and his followers are still roaming the hills fighting a guerilla campaign against beastmen, or held prisoner. If you fancy fleshing that out as something your PCs want to get involved in it will serve just as well.

But if you don't then the easiest thing is just for them to be dead.

page 40,

Gudrun Ensslin - Innkeeper

last paragraph

'Gudrun's activities have left him vulnerable. Victimising Strigany is one thing, but murdering priests in quite another.'

D'oh, I figured it out as I was typing it. The reference is for Shallyan's. Not the sigmarite priest. Sorry!

Think it says that it's been 3 weeks since the Sigmar priest left the town.

Is the Famine Fiend a reference to a creature in Warhammer lore or something to be released in an upcoming product? Not that I am opposed to making something up myself, but less work is always appreciated.

Also, I really liked the timing in the first fight. So, you don't want to fatigue yourself? Then people die.... heheh

He is a powerful beastman shaman special character, also known as Slugtounge, in the Beastmen army book for WFB - a sort of embodiment of famine and winter. I would suggest the PCs don't tackle him directly but they may come across his beastmen followers. He seems to take a particular interest in destroying agricultural efforts (as described in the story told by the farmer in Horror of Hugeldal). He is described as an old and withered beastman with a skull head and infested with all manner of slugs and creepy crawlies.

If you really want to pit your PCs up against him I'd suggest using Foaldeath's profile from A Gathering Storm with the following adjustments:

Bump up wounds to 18.

Regeneration: Recover 1 wound at the end of each round (may not recover wounds caused by fire).

Poison: When The Famine Fiend inflicts a critical wound target suffers Fatigue equal to the severity of the critical wound.

Beastman Shaman: As Foaldeath, though I'd give him a few extra spells from the Amethyst college deck to represent his life-sapping abilities too.
