Greenskin Intrigue

By shinma, in WFRP Gamemasters

Hey guys,

My group should be finishing up Eye for an Eye this weekend, and their next adventure will probably take them to drop off the family hammer in the Grey Mountains.

Since the group is very cult and intrigue focused, there's very few shots I'll get to use our beloved Greenskins so I figure I might as well trot them out. Only catch is, while my 'soccer hooligan' accent is awesome, I'm blanking on a good plotline to go with it aside from the sporadic WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH out of the mountains.

Any interesting ideas out there that can get my brain percolating?

I've been kicking around an idea that the PCs are at a town, and explore around it for some reason. They have to cross a bridge to get to wherever they go. When they get back to town, they are drafted to help defend it from greenskin attack. The commander asks them to scout ahead, and tells them not to worry about their flank because the bridge is out. The PCs know the bridge isn't out because they have already crossed it.

Not knowing your party's combat power, you could have them be ambushed by a group of greenskins. One goblin escapes, and follows the PC's.

The goblin has a problem. He's extremely brilliant! And would be a much better leader then the clans current stupid leader. Problem is that the current leader likes his position, and is quite strong/aggressive... So said goblin has been toying with ideas on how to kill him. Ideas ranging from dropping a big rock on his head, to cutting the robes restraining the war squigs, and also trying to persuade the leader to sit on the catapult seat...

All attempts has failed so far, but the goblin has masterly managed to frame another goblin every time.

Now he sees the PC's and an idea spawns... an idea so clever his head is slightly hurting from the cleverness.

He will try'n lure the PC's to meet with the goblin leader, at a place, some place, not sure where, but he's certain that will fall in place at the right time.

So he'll first act as the PC's shadow, starting by leaving food near their camp, for the PC's to find when they wake up. Delicious food like only slightly rotten carcasses of birds, rabbits etc... maybe even a bloated fish?

Later when he knows the PC's will like their protector he'll lure other greenskins to them, and warn the PC's before the greenskins attack! Brilliant, simply brilliant.

Now the PC loves him, and he can reveal himself as a goblin who wants redemption for all the cruel stuff he's done. So he wants to help the PC's find a hidden dwarven treasure. "Many shinnies, culd be mur than wut my hands can carri?!?"

Meanwhile he's let it slip to the goblin leader that said treasure has been found, so he meets the PC's there.

Of course the trap should be clear to the PC's from 10 miles away. The goblin will reveal himself a zillion times. But portray him somewhat likable, so the PC's get curious as to what he's up to. But most important portray him as someone who believes he's got it all figured out, and yet has not understood anything. The outcome can be various... maybe the leader sends some other goblins there instead, the dwarven treasure is inhabited by a huge and very very hungry troll, etc... The goblin could think he won, only to slip and fall to his death etc...

The "scenario" main point being to show the PC's that greenskins are not "just" savages, but have a complex society with constant power struggles.

The goblin might even become somewhat of a "friend" afterwards, giving them a prized treasure (a human skull maybe...), or in some other way help them later.

Forgot to add, that greenskins in my world mainly serves two purposes:

1) The clowns of Warhammer, meaning allmost everything about them is a joke. Their speech, their constant plotting to usurp each other, etc...

2) To show players that WHEN greenskins do band together, they're a freakish frightfull force!!! A Whaarg! is a force rivaling what the combined chaos powers can field. It's a green tidal-wave that washes away everything, but like water it reaches a peek and then fast rushes back (usually when some shaman explodes killing the war-boss, and starting a power-struggle).

Greenskins are like a religous fanatic expressing his ideas. In some weird way it's freaking funny, but it's also darn scary.

Don't forget that Orcs can be quite cunning as well (they're not all totally dim). A crafty Orc scout could cause all sorts of difficulty for your party...

Here is what I'm doing in my own campaign... I won't go into all details, but will give you the main arc.

Introduction

1.- The PCs find some Orcs ambushing a Coach or a merchant.

2.- The Orcs are in possession of high quality weapons, obviously of Dwarven origin (maybe even some gunpowder weapons with the stamp from Nuln).

3.- Apparently there is some big Orc meeting nearby, and the Orcs are preparing to attack a town, mines, or whatever suits your campaign (this they obtain when interrogating the Orc warriors or by tracking them back to their camp).

The Plot

1.- The weapons have been sold to the Orcs by one of the Noble contenders (through some shady contacts of the Noble) trying to control Übersreik. It could be any of the Edge of Night main Noble characters or any other Noble of your choosing; the important thing is for the Noble to be a military character.

2.- The Noble has given information to the Orcs on how and where to attack. He has also worked to weaken the defenses of that village, and is at the same time hiring a big private army. His intention is to appear as a saviour when he appears just in time to rescue the town from the Orc attack.

Possible extra complications/fun

1.- The Orc warlord is more cunning than expected and suspects the Noble's motives... He prepares an ambus, massacres the private army and does conquer the town.

2.- The weapons sold to the Orcs have been somehow marked so that they appear to come from one of the other Nobles fighting for the control of Übersreik.

Well, I hope the ideas above help you... I would love FFG to publish some Orc & Goblins supplement/scenarios in the future, as they were completely forgotten in 1st and 2nd edition and can be really cool and funny villains.

If anybody has any interesting ideas to add to this campaign arc, please let me know, as my campaign is running at the moment (a mix of Eye for an Eye, Edge of Night and the above).
