WFR, Thieves guild, Lies of Locke Lamora and me

By anthri, in WFRP Gamemasters

I'm getting slightly ahead of myself by planning to run a game loosely based on the excellent Lies of Locke Lamora/Red Seas Under Red Skies books by Scott Lynch (read them if you haven't!). The story is about a con artist and thief in a fantasy world that shares a passing resemblemce to Warhammer's.

I feel I must mention at this point that while I have run games for decades, this will be my first using the Warhammer rules. My reading of the rules suggest that a skill and social heavy game would work well in WFRP, and that the gritty combat system serves my setting well. It's true I haven't actually played it yet, but will be starting to experiment this weekend.

I'll be creating the characters, with some input from the players. One of the changes to the setting will be to allow priestly magic for the players, while wizard magic(Bondman) will be off limits to them (at least at first)

These are the general characters: I'd like to have 8 or 9 ideas so that my players get a bit of choice, Can anyone think of other roles appropriate for a gang of thieves and con artists? Are there better Career choices? Combat will be against noble (Duelists not Knights), other gangs, the occaisional bout with the Watch, possibly the non-existant skaven, and the occaisional Eldren/Chaos creature.

  1. Leader/Mastermind
  2. Enforcer (Mercenary, Soldier?)
  3. Con Man (Agent or Agitator)
  4. Mechanic (Thief)
  5. Priest of Ranald
  6. Street Person (Ratcatcher?)
  7. Thug (Thug, Pit Fighter)
  8. Gambler (Gambler)
  9. Dilettante (Roper)

The Locke Lamora books are just plain awsome. Wish he'd write another book soon. And yeah, in some ways it does resemble Warhammer a bit, much like most dark/low fantasy.

As for careers, once I don't see mentioned thta would problably fit in somewhere in the theme are the Smuggler career from the core set and the Chraltan and Forger from the Winds Of Magic box and the possibly the Entertainer from the Signs Of Faith box.
