Session One: The package and the pamphlet
Our tale begins in Ubersreik. The young apprentice Arius has left the walls of Altdorf for the first time in many years. Newly graduated he has been given a mission by his master: travel to Ubersreik and await the arrival of a package at the Sigmar's Hammer Inn. The package however is already a day late and young Arius is growing quite nervous while waiting at the bar when a very drunk peasant spills his drink all over him while attempting to strike up a conversation. Arius is incensed at this creature, "dressed" in rat pelts in various states of decay. Attempting to placate the Arius Klaus introduces himself and offers to help the wizard with whatever it is that is troubling him. After hearing of the wizards troubles Klaus offers to go and help look for this package with the help of his friend Henrick if it still has not arrived on the following day. Henrick meanwhile is engaged in a drinking contest with a dwarf and holding his own. Klaus regales Arius of life in the swears and of rats as big as men! eventually Henrick succumbs to his drink and they drag his unconscious body to his room and turn in for the night.
Early in the morning Klaus and Arius make their way to the western gate to see if the coach had arrived in the night, no luck. Klaus leads the wizard to a messenger service that will ensure a message delivered to his master back in Altdorf. While returning to the Inn they come across a mob surrounding a man dressed all in black leading several chained peasants and a contingent of town guards. Curious Klaus and Arius watch this procession. It quickly becomes known that the man in black is the renowned witch hunter Heisenberg. Recently the town of Ubersreik has been plagued with dissenters calling for the peasantry to rise up against the nobility. In light of the unrest the towns freestate status has come into question and various noble families have begun to make their bids of control. Meanwhile in the forests something has been driving the beastmen to be ever more vicious and daring. The peasants were found carrying pamphlets of revolt on their person and were executed to the cheers of the crowd. All of this impressed one very important fact upon Klaus, paper can get you killed and, seeing as he can't read, should be avoided at all costs.
Back to the inn they go, where Henrick it seems has awoken and found a work bill. 6 shillings a day to help a noble move. They go off to meet this other Henrick and take the job. Though they are a motley crew Herr Henrick is short on time and temperament and so hires them. It seems Lord Aschaffenberg does not like the staff of his recently acquired hunting lodge. Therefore under the pretense of helping him move they are to investigate a bit and see if they can find out why the place sets him on edge so. And off they go down the road. Not a couple miles out and they come upon a grisly scene. A merchant wagon has been waylaid by beastmen, its defenders mercilessly slaughtered, and the contents of the wagon carried off. After some investigation it seems this was the same line that was carrying the package that Arius was waiting for. The band quickly leaves the area and rests for the night in a small town. Klaus sleeps in the carriage to "guard" the belongings, as well as have a peak. While rummaging around he comes across a pamphlet under the seat of the drive. Remember the events of earlier he carefully replaces it and thinks better of snooping any more. The morning dawns bright and crisp as they set off into the ever darkening forest. The trees seem to almost loom at them as shapes flit betwixt the boughs and angry red eyes watch them.
Finally the hunting lodge is insight when a bestial cry echoes out of the woods and several misshapen beasts lunge out of the trees killing one of the horses. The Henricks valiantly defend against the onslaught while the guards on the ramparts watch lazily. The beastmen are eventually driven off and the coach pulled inside the safety of the walls…..
