Are there rules for using a Grid?

By BFTrick2, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hello there,

I was wondering if there are rules (or suggestions) for using a grid. If there are what scale do you use? The issue I have is that making the each grid block which is a 1" X 1" square 5 units is that the space marines don't always move in increments of 5 units. Which would mean you would have to straddle the grid at which point it becomes more of a hassle.

The reason I want to use a grid is that I want people to model their character using the 40k models. I have tons of xenos models to use and I think it creates a better experience.

Maybe as an alternative I could have people pull out their measure tape but that sounds unnecessarily complex.

Another alternative would be to force everything to move in increments of 5 units. But then the fast characters are no longer fast.

Any thoughts?

Generally my group uses a 1" grid = 1 Meter. If we feel a grid is needed at a larger scale, which we have, we just scale up as needed with movement rounding off to the grid.

So, in DH, if a grid of 1 = 3m is needed, 3m gives almost everyone a half move = 1 square movement, a half move of 4m slows sightly to 3m for ease, but a half move of 5 would scale to 2 squares. It's effective, if not totaly accurate. Anything beyond that we generally go cinematic/map-less.

1 = 4m might be better for DW.

I generally just use 1 grid = 1 meter. If stuff needs to be scaled out further you go cinematic or scale up to whatever fits the mat/grid.

We use 1" = 2 meters, which mostly approximates the 1" = 5 feet of 4th Ed D&D and other games. It also allows for longer range combat without running out of room on the grid. :)
