I was just finishing putting together the character sheet for a librarian that's going to be a part of our Deathwatch game and have got a question about their starting equipment.

As I understand it, you start off the game with 0 reknown, which would equate to no reknown rating. However the librarian starts off with a force weapon, which, when I had a look at the options for them in the Armory, requires the respected reknown rating.

Have I read the reknown rating things wrong? If not, can I just choose either the sword or the staff(?) for the librarian despite the fact he does not meet the reknown requirements?

Yes, you can. The standard equipment are the basic tools of your trade and the Deathwatch makes sure that its marines have those. Renown comes in when you want tools beyond the basic tools of your trade. You can choose between a force sword and a force staff.

Page 28 lists the starting equipment.

Note that the Standard issue and Specialties are cumulative, so a Librarian would get a bolter, bolt pistol, combat knife and their choice of force weapon.

Yeah, I understood that part of it. But, as I was writing up the character sheets for our game, the force weapons were the only equipment that I've got to so far that required any form of reknown above the starting level to requisition.

As force weapons seem pretty meaty, I just wanted to make sure that I hadn't misread anything and given the librarian excaliber while the other marines got a wet sock full of custard
