Righteous Fury Questions

By Scoates, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hi, I'm on here representing my group. We've run into a problem, and I hope we are calculating incorrectly. Please look over the following, and let me know if you see any errors.

The tactical marine in our group used hellfire rounds in a storm bolter. A storm bolter fires two bullets at a time (up to 8). Due to the tearing quality, three d10s are rolled for each bullet (one discarded), for a total of six dice being rolled per shot (two discarded). Since righteous fury may be scored on a roll of nine or ten (hellfire rounds) you end up with about a 74% chance of righteous fury triggering per bullet. This is likely to stack multiple times.

Now, when Full-Auto fire is used, based on the description in the book, if any of the dice from the attack are 9 or 10, the entire attack is repeated (up to eight shots again). I have to assume that this is an error, and that each bullet triggers separately, adding the extra damage from ONE bullet for each Righteous Fury triggered.

So, even the weaker of our two interpretations leads to massive damage rolls--the equivalent of 20-30 bullets, except much more powerful, since each of these are clusters of 3-4 damage rolls that all stack together before armor and toughness are deducted.

So this is our interpretation, as per our reading of the text. I sincerely hope someone can cite a rule that we are missing, or have miss-read.

Thank you for your time.

With the storm quality, I roll for simplicity's sake once for damage and then double the damage. Yes, the weaker interpretation above is correct. Originally (in DH) RF only adds one additional D10 to damage (which may trigger another dice on a 10, etc). The new RF rule is insane. Personally, I use a middle ground approach between what DH ruled and the DW rule: I will let players re-reroll all D10 which came up as a 10 (or 9 and 10 with hellfire rounds) if they pass their WS or BS test. That should be enough.

It was kind of unclear when you said this, so...

When using full auto, the roll to confirm does not add "more shots" to the attack. It purely is a test to see if the RF occurs. In the current RAW, it does allow full damage to be rolled (although remember even with storm, damage is still dealt by shot), so in this case, 3d10 + X lowest. With a chance for continued damage with 9s or 10s (in this specific case). This is particularly nasty, I would reccomend to go back to the 1d10 of DH/RT.

To reiterate, RF does not repeat the whole attack (your RoF is still 4). The Storm quality means that each DoS gives an additional hit, not that each hit does double damage.

So, firing Full Auto with a storm bolter and getting 1 DoS does 4 hits of 2d10+5 Tearing, not 2 hits of 4d10+10. This reduces the RF chance per shot, but doubles the number of opportunities for RF.
