Starting Gathering Storm with Celestial wizard - need help

By Mordjinn, in WFRP Gamemasters

Hi all. We're getting ready to start the Gathering Storm and after reading the campaign start I realized one problem concerning my group. The group is to believe that Schulmann is a hot shot veteran Celestial wizard, right? Now in my group I have a celestial wizard, who has been recently in the college, so he probably would know who Schulmann is and that he's not that talented. How would you introduce Shulmann to my group?

Thanks for the help.

I don't think it is a reasonable expectation that all members of a given College know of each other by name and/or reputation. If it makes you feel better, give your mage a roll to see what/if he knows anything and if he is successful, he's heard the name Schulmann and knows he is an Acolyte that is currently out in the field and not much more than that.

That's a valid point. Is there any inclination of the number of students in college in Winds of Magic? And are the "classes" like in school or is everyone studying more or less by themselves?

Winds of Magic has more detail. There's a constant "enrollment" as applicants arrive (different colleges have different means of acquiring applicants). Training is often teacher-student pairings, not so much a "classroom", although again it depends on the college and teachers. Apprentices will be at varying levels, as will Acolytes. Oftentimes, experienced apprentices will be sent out on missions, and many acolytes or Wizards will work for the college, yet not live/work in Altdorf and so have little contact with other wizards (especially apprentices and acolytes), as they are spread out across the Empire for various reasons.

Essentially, it is quite possible for two Celestial wizard Apprentices or Acolytes to have never met nor heard of each other.

Excellent, thanks for this. I'll be picking up my copy of Winds of Magic soon, but this helped me a lot when preparing for the Gathering Storm. Nice!

If it is not to late you can fudge roll. Say to the player:"roll xxx if you know him", and while he is grabbing dices, say "ahh - I think I roll for you, .."

Roll for the wizard and say You know him from collegue and he was ahead of you as far you remember he left Altdorf on a very special misson.
