Tip: Deadly Combat

By EineHund, in WFRP Gamemasters

Soo...I've greatly enjoyed this game so far but would find myself wondering after a session if I was either being too easy on them [combat wise] or we had a way combat heavy party. I don't plan to kill off my players and overall we are much more interested in making a great story than being combat beasts - but I feel you NEED the tension of possible death to keep the game 'honest'.

So on to the point of my ramble...lol - running the Snow White & Rose Red adventure I had converted - the first fight where there is a werewolf and some henchmen giant wolves went a bit easy with some wounds but no one knocked out.

With the next night encounter I opted to have "just" five NON-hechmen wolves - one for each player. Wow - now THAT was a tense, deadly fight - and it moved fairly smoothly as I did three groups of 2, 2, 1 for the wolves. Had one fellow with a single wound before his threshold and another with 2 from his threshold - with only a single party member NOT wounded. Very, very, bloody affair!

This isn't meant to be a ramble or even a tirade against or for the combat difficulty - just a tip for anyone who feels they don't have enough danger: Use less henchmen and opt for regular guys [which is, I know, actually suggested as a balancer in the book...I was just leary!]
