What's to stop someone from registering 'community.fantasyflightgames.com' and restoring the forums in a third party capacity once FFG decommissione it?

You can't register a subdomain. That's not how it works.

You could register communityfantasyflightgames.com and hope to catch a few mistyping forum seekers.

Did a quick check and it does appear that people have been saving it. It's not automatic, of course, someone has to manually ask for it be saved each time. So probably a good idea to go to the wayback website and trigger it each day to be sure.
