When does Dooku (or 3po) make their change?

By OG-Kumara, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Quick question that seems like it may have a potentially obvious answer, but when is Dooku/3po making their changes to the dice roll ?

Rules as written, it seems that both of these characters are effectively causing a dice mod, so they happen in the dice mod step , following normal rules for player mod order.

My friend and I are a bit uncertain about this part though: In our last game we had a ship with Zuckuss (crew) shooting someone w/ Dooku (crew) onboard. Dooku carrier rolls one dice and calls 'evade' and rolls a blank, does he then change it to an evade immediately (to correct the prediction called by Dooku), and then Zuck forces a reroll OR does the opportunity to Zuck pass before Dooku does his dice correction modification?

Essentially, is there a moment after a dice roll in which these two prediction based upgrades trigger or do their results happen in the normal player order of modification?

As a parallel example, imagine a 3po correctly guessing an evade, would that evade be juke'd / Zuck'd before checking to see if the prediction was true?

Cheers!

Let's look at them one at a time! Here's my opinion and evaluation...

  • C-3PO: Before rolling defense dice, you may spend 1 calculate token to guess aloud a number 1 or higher. If you do and you roll exactly that many results, add 1 [evade] result. (other abilities irrelevant)
    • As far as triggering Threepio, you need to make your call before you roll (obviously). After you roll dice, if your guess was correct, you add an evade. Now, since he doesn't say to add it at a certain time, I'm inclined to think that this evade is actually added at the typical time: when the defender modifies defense dice. Whether your initial roll is juked is irrelevant... you still guessed your roll correctly.
  • Count Dooku: Before a ship at range 0-2 rolls attack or defense dice, if all of your [FORCE] are active, you may spend 1 [FORCE] and name a result. If the roll does not contain the named result, the ship must change 1 die to that result.
    • Again, you need to make the call at the proper right time (before rolling dice). If the roll (the initial throw of the dice) does not contain the targeted result, then when it comes to your turn in the modification cycle, you get to add that result to the mix. This means that, if Dooku wants to modify the opponent's dice, his mod will happen before the opponent has a chance to do anything about their roll. Conversely, if Dooku wants to modify his own dice, the opponent modifies first, then Dooku applies the modification he called (among any other mods he chooses).

Both modify the dice after the dice are rolled and before the Modify Dice step.

From the Rules Reference under card clarifications:

C-3PO - " Q: How does Han Solo [Rebel, Modified YT-1300]'s ability interact with C-3PO [Rebel, Crew]?

A: The "if you do and you roll exactly that many evade results..." portion of C-3PO's ability triggers occurs after the dice are rolled, before the Modify Dice step. Thus, Han Solo's effect occurs after C-3PO's effect has been resolved. If using Han Solo after using C-3PO, the added die must be rerolled."

Count Dooku - " Q: When does Count Dooku ( W )'s ability take effect?

A: Count Dooku's ability takes effect after the dice are rolled (before the Modify Dice step during an attack, or before other dice modification effects are applied for dice rolled at any other time)."
