First steps into epic (Imperial)

By Synel, in X-Wing Epic Play

Hi! I’ve long thought about getting into epic. A small group of local x-wingers and I are planning for a first game for us all next month. We’re playing two people to a team, imperials vs rebels. I and my teammate are inexperienced in squad building for epic, of course. I’m looking for advice in, mainly, building the one capital ship on our squad. I’ve taken this shot below. Is this good? Is less better than more? And what kind of ships/wings would be good for a first game in general (what is fun/interesting and simple)? I basically have no concept for what are “good” styles of capital ship build.

Raider -class Corvette - Outer Rim Patrol - 174
Outer Rim Patrol - (146)
Proton Torpedoes (12)
Homing Missiles (5)
Ordnance Tubes (Offline) (1)
Targeting Battery (Offline) (6)
•Impetuous (4)

Total: 174

Welcome to your fist step into a larger world. 😉

Since I really think that experimenting is the thing, I'll just offer some general guidelines.

Using ordnance is a great way to reduce energy management, which can be a little confusing at first. One thing I'd say you are missing is teams. They can give a linked calculate action which is very helpful, and you currently have no way to reload your missiles when you are out of charges.

Here's a Raider I did:

First Order Collaborators — Raider-class Corvette 146
Plasma Torpedoes 7
Homing Missiles 5
Ordnance Tubes 1
Bombardment Specialists 6
Ordnance Team 4
Ship Total: 169

Half Points: 85 Threshold: 14

The ordnance team lets you reload, and the Bombard Specs let you fire at alternate ranges for maximum flexibility with your missiles.

Lastly, I would suggest using generics that you have kitted out to be the same in groups of 3 or 4; even if you don't use wings, it can be a lot less of a headache to remember how your list works to have ships of all the same style plus and ace or 2 for supporting roles. I mean, I basically means you have 4 or 5 ships in a list like usual, it's just that one "ship" is a flight of generics.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice on everything, and specifically teams. I’ll take a look at the two you mentioned.

On the subject of reloading, I see my mistake. The new official app has a reload icon (must be another one of the many glitches in ship info that have surfaced). Launch bay next has jam in the same slot, and I assume that is correct for the actual actions printed on the card.

This ended up being the list I and my teammate used. We had a blast! The raider is vicious in it’s ability to fire ordinance!

(146) Outer Rim Patrol [Raider-class Corvette]

Vader flew in a wing, which worked out very well - being able to often evade against one hit and pass another on to a tie fighter in the wing. The dreadnought hunter didn’t trigger, but there were a lot of precision damage effects that triggered anyway. I’ll definitely be playing epic again sometime. Gotta get my own raider and epic set.

Nice Vader leading a wing I have also found to be effective, if you have points you may want to replace one of the standard TIEs with howl runner. I don't have a raider my self but i have never destroyed one and have heard I'm not the only one, so sounds like you made a nice pick up.
