The Yogo Curse, Part 1 - Scorpion Story Discussion

By Vulcan646, in L5R LCG: Lore Discussion

A new Scorpion fiction has been post at the below link:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2020/11/18/the-yogo-curse-part-1/

As per the ffg article, it is based on the Scorpian getting control of Kunshu after the Kunshu Kotei season.

Additionally, it is also based on a dangerous oni escaping a confrontation, at the Shinomen estate, in the aftermath of the 2019 Gen Con Roleplaying scenario.

Shazang!

SPOILER GAP

Yogo Junzo’s already fulfilled his curse! But the Scorpion are under supernatural siege! Too tall Scorpion get sent to the Wall to become Crab! Scorpion-Crab-Mantis alliance confirmed! I’m Crane so I think that’s just clawful!

I wonder if Lady Atsuko is Isawa Atsuko, and then, what happened that she is not using the Isawa name or if she is even human.

I don't remember from the old lore... does the Yogo individual *know* that the curse has been fulfilled? If not, maybe Junzo *thinks* it has, but maybe he didn't love his father and, therefore...

From The Highwayman Gencon adventure:

Lady Atsuko, Sharp-Tongued Oni: An elderly oni who alternates between extreme kindness and disgust for those around her. Her wrinkled face is scored with heavy dark bags under her eyes. She hides unders the guise of an elderly woman.

Yes, a Yogo always knows where their curse is fulfilled, so Junzo's in the clear. Having to turn his own father over to the Kuroiban may have been honourable and necessary, but it's a profound betrayal of his family to expose their shame.

Thanks. Interesting, then. Whatever fate befalls Junzo this time around, it won't be caused by an ancestral curse.

And from this admittedly brief peek inside his mind, he doesn't seem to be the Fight Maho with Maho type. Also, the Shinomen is a pretty active force at the moment. Evil is stirring everywhere, and all of it congregating on Kunshu. Now it's a race to get the sword to one of the princes, or one of the princes to Scorpion territory through a Shadowlands siege. And which prince? Sotorii who cursed it, or Daisetsu who doubts Bushido and the Celestial Blessing of the Hantei?

Also; the 'gift' of Sake is almost certainly some of the stolen Kawacho sake.

And yes - it's also worth noting that the old woman is basically her shape 'folded up' - as well as being manipulative and sarcastic, she's actually a monstrously huge centipede, and rather dangerous in a fight.

.....Who else thinks the mission to Beiden Pass was supposed to be for Jiro, not Hideo?

I think the question will be who arranged for Hideo to go was it Jiro or the fiancée?

Unless exposure to the newly cursed Kunshu could lead to his curse being "reset". He speaks very highly of his love for the Empire is all I'm saying.

one assumes he did, or is at least partially complicit, since he's the one getting haunted.

Does anyone know where ffg confirmed the offical result of the 2019 Gencon adventure?

Since it plays into this story, it would be nice to know what the other options were.

I follow their articles fairly regularly but I don't remember seeing anything about the official result.

They didn't. Tyler popped onto discord and said that there were problems with affirming a formal official result in a normal fashion so they weren't planning to, but this is the result.

Pretty sure from what I've heard the "formal" results were usually very bad for the PC's as most groups either didn't finish or were almost entirely wiped out the first time they tried it.

I understand groups that ran it the second time at Worlds (which I believe offered play throughs as well) faired better since some players had previously played the module and so had better grasp of what needed to be done earlier to set up success in the later sections but even then it was still not a great result for the PC's as there were plenty of ways to "mess" up the adventure.

Got it. Thanks to both of you for explaining g what happened.

I guess that also explains why this oni is still running undetected (on top of the obvious explanation that she is just good at hiding her presence.)

I mean, apparently it is considered extremely rude to just go Jade Striking anyone you meet to confirm they are not Tainted. Otherwise she would have been found out in no time.

The Highwayman ends up playing as a horror one-shot where the goal is to live to escape Shinomen alive.

I’d suspect that the end results were that both oni and the rakshasa survive.

I played twice. At Gencon, 1 of our 5 had never played an RPG before and 2 had never played any sort of L5R. Our GM did not give an objective for the intrigue either and didn't seem very familiar with how to run one. We barely began the conflict before time was called. At Worlds I played again, and our group was able to get through and kill all 3 oni. But that was with an experienced group of RPers, some lucky rolls, and a really good understanding about how to manipulate the game system for 5th ed.

I didn't know the Scorpion lands had so many demon gates...

One would think they would have more specialists in fighting shadowlands creatures.

It isn't that Scorpion Lands have demon gates. The demon gates are actually reflections of Asian folklore. In China, and to a lesser extent Japan, north-east and south-west were considered unlucky directions. It's possibly luck from the original designers that the Festering Pit is to the south-west of Rokugan, but it actually plays into this bit of belief quite well.

If you note, Jiro says Hideo was killed on his wedding day. Kasume was dressed for mourning when Jiro got her drunk and proposed to her. Jiro is clearly very much in love with Kasume. And now Hideo, who was killed in battle on a dangerous mission, is haunting Jiro? My guess is that Hideo and Kasume were going to be married, and a jealous Jiro intentionally betrayed his best friend either hoping or intending for Hideo to die, so that Kasume would be free to marry him.

That is 100% the subtext to Jiro’s haunting.

We keep trying to get that trending but the soft northern Clans would rather sip tea and gossip about fashion.

That's just slander from what is obviously a bog hag or some other kind of shapeshifter.

We know what she is. Spoilers for The Highwayman.

She's a giant centipede oni

Given that the new Dynasty Pack will have a Black Scroll, I believe that in the second part Yogo will read it. Perhaps to fight off the oni that is moving towards him. Or to keep Kunshu.
