Dragon Age magic system

By Priest of Innos, in Your Settings

Hi,

I am currently working on Dragon Age conversion for Genesys. I have to admit, that despite loving Genesys, I am somewhat disappointed with general concepts of magic and the rules for it.

So I am working now on my own ruleset for magic. I have several goals with that:

  • to create something simple. Spells throughtout the schools (skills) should be as unified as possible and magic should be at least a little bit improvisable (as is the general one, after all). I wanted to avoid creating spell list (though partially ended with one) in DnD style.
  • to create something scalable in power through Successes, Advantages, Triumphs etc. That is something I miss greatly with original magic rules.
  • to create some scaling with "levelling"

Thus I shamelessly stole every possible concept from Force and Destiny and merged it somehow with Genesys and Dragon Age lore. Also, I am going to use Morality and Conflict from Force and Destiny and following magic rules are referring to it occasionally.

The problem is, that I have only very little experience with Genesys so far (I discovered it only half a year ago) and I never played any Star Wars FFG (though read them all with love, passion and admiration). And so I would like to ask you all a big favour and give me some veteran advices, thoughts and notes, how usable this is or how can I improve it.

EDIT: 4. 11. 2020. I received some feedback on Reddit and reworked this from basics.

i did not read very deep into the dragon age rules ...

... but arent the magic schools of DA more suited as Talent-trees rather than anything freeform ?

I didnt think about it like that. Would you have more ideas about it?

if you look at the following links:

https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Spells_(Dragon_Age_II)

https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Spells_(Origins)

https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Abilities_(Inquisition)#Mage_Abilities

and finally this:

https://wondersofthedaspodcast.wordpress.com/resources-for-the-dragon-age-rpg/spell-tree-charts/

you can build up talent-trees ... some more easiely ... some need more work.

for example: just keep stress spending and the skill roll at standard difficulty.

One idea was actually to open the system, which was build with limitations of a pc game, to a narrative gaming -> to create something capturing the narrative of the magic.
