What would you like the next SW cartoon to be about?

By Mandalore of the Rings, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Have any of you guys read the Vader comics? At the time they were the only thing that showed actually Darth Vader being OP, then rouge one came out.

Vader was in a makeup commercial?

Not Canon , but pretty good.

What?! They aren't canon?! I feel like the ground has shifted under me. 🙂

Actually, they are pretty fun.

Something really old might be cool too... Knights of the Old Republic old.

I actually wouldn't mind some more adventures of the OT gang in animated format. I guess, not all together but mix it up... have Luke go and do something with some new characters... or send Lando to do something. Han and Chewie have to do some smuggling stuff or whatever. I think it could work. We have enough characters already that have multiple actors or voice actors, so I personally wouldn't be bothered by it.

Rogue One , not Rouge One. Rouge is a color.

I can't even begin to comprehend the mental gymnastics required to achieve a headspace in which one dislikes Rebels and at the same time loves the original trilogy.

Liking Clone Wars and not Rebels, I can somewhat understand because they're very different.

I don't follow your train of logic here. They aren't the same thing. It is possible to really like a movie in a trilogy, and then vociferously dislike its sequel (I know, because I did). Why can you not dislike a show that takes place in the same era as something you do like? Same goes for Clone Wars. I know several people that disliked the Prequels (though they liked where the story went, just not the movies themselves) and liked Clone Wars.

The train of thought is that people who like A will like things very similar to A.

The Clone Wars show is not similar to the Prequels, except in the most superficial, visual style (and even then the characters look very differently until season 7.

Meanwhile the original trilogy and Rebels are incredibly similiar in what kinds of stories they tell and what kinds of comedy they use.

Luke's good years at his academy. With Mark Hamil voicing Luke!

They aren't all that similar. The stories are entirely different. They may have some similar elements, but the characters and stories (the most important parts) are entirely different. Not even back-to-back movies are going to be so similar that it takes mental gymnastics to like one and not the other.

Liking A means you are more likely to like things very similar to A, not that you will. Something as simple as a single character can make or break a movie or TV show.

I don't understand how you got this so stuck in your mind. Very few things fit in such neat little boxes.

I guess I am one of the odd people out, I've enjoyed all of the animated shows so far, canon or not. Sure there are some episodes that don't hit, but overall they're enjoyable. I've watched FAR worse.

I'd like to see cartoons about:

  • A long running series about the Rebel Alliance fighting the Empire between ANH and RotJ that doesn't focus on the main heroes
  • A high-Republic show, not sure what, but to tie in with the new media
  • I like the idea of a young Obi-Wan and Qui Gon show that someone else mentioned
  • A cartoon that is alien-centric. I'd like to see something that focuses on aliens experiences in the various eras. Move away from the human-centric shows.

IF we aren't getting a 1313 game, might as well get a show out of it. But then again, I don't think I would want such a show to be too kid-friendly. So perhaps not.

I don't know what your standard is for "not too kid-friendly," but The Mandalorian did a good job of walking the line. It's family-friendly, but still manages to feel pretty gritty. I think they could do a show in the underlevels of Coruscant that manages to capture the feel without anything egregious. If you watch the background of the Clone Wars when they're in the underworld of Coruscant, it hints at some pretty nasty stuff without getting to the point where you're covering your child's eyes and ears. Star Wars has always been not necessarily for kids, but suitable for them. I don't really want that to change, I don't want there to be a Star Wars show you can't watch with your kids (well, kids 7+ at least [just as a general range]).

A few of ideas come to mind.

  • A follow up series to Rebels about Thrawn and Ezra and what happened to them. Rebels 2.0
  • A High Republic era show, it would be something new and not tied directly to the Skywalker story.
  • A show that takes place after the Sequels. I'd prefer it not be about the main characters from the movies, but Rey, Fin, or Poe showing up from time to time would be fine.
  • Old Republic cartoon would be pretty amazing! Having it set during the time period of the MMO but not necessarily being beholden to the lore they have written for the game, or they could set it between KOTOR and TOR.
  • Origins of the Jedi series might be pretty awesome, I know it was rumored to be the project the Game of Thrones guys were working on. They could take those same concepts and turn it into an animation series.

Oh, and Thrawn’s usage almost felt like it was meant to be intentionally offensive to those of us who’d read Zahn’s original trilogy...

as someone who continued to “check in” on these series on occasion

Somehow I feel you are way too opinionated about the later series‘ contents than a casual viewing of occasional episodes would allow for.

IT always amazes me how many people expect super compelling stories from new characters. You cant have those stories till you know the characters and care enough about what happens to them.

I'd like to see something like the Mandalorian, meaning something that has nothing to do with the Skywalker Saga. Just a peek into some as yet unexplored part of the Galaxy, possibly set during the Galactic Civil War or the early years of the Empire. I wouldn't mind seeing more about Enfys Nest and her gang from Solo. They did show up in Rebels and Jedi: Fallen Order, but I think it would be cool to see a series that involved the Inquisitors. Maybe something set during the aftermath of the Clone Wars when Vader was establishing the Inquisitorius and hunting down the remnants of the Jedi? I always liked Hondo Onaka myself, I bet he could carry a series!

I liked TCW Hondo, mercurial but competent, and rather fearless. Rebels Hondo was kind of a hapless goofball, afraid of his own shadow. But maybe exploring how he evolved from one to the other could be interesting.

I liked both, but I struggle to think of them as the same character given how different they are in many ways. I prefer Clone Wars Hondo.

I do look forward to someday including "HONdo OhNAkaaa" in one of my campaigns. He's a hoot.

I’d like to see an archaeologist that Luke hires to help find Jedi/Sith secrets after the destruction of the second Death Star, since Luke would undoubtedly be very busy and it’s a big galaxy.

And sure Doctor Aphra can make an appearance, but I’d rather she (and the “goateed” versions of the droids and Chewbacca) not be the focus.

Clone Wars Hondo was Curse of the Black Pearl Captain Jack Sparrow.

Rebels Hondo was Captain Jack Sparrow from the sequels.

Both takes are fun, but they serve different purposes.

My wife hates Hondo. I think he’s a blast. One session of a campaign we’re in, because my character had been split from the rest of the group in the previous one for story reasons, the GM gave me Hondo to play. I had a ton of fun. My wife was...not amused. 🤣 (In another campaign, the same GM introduced him as a recurring NPC. My wife was giddy when he ended up getting killed.)

I think he got that way because he lost everything during the clone wars. so he lost much of his confidence and lost his men.

- A noir style private eye type show set in the Star Wars universe. It would be a prime opportunity to show what actually living in the Star Wars universe is like and in particular really gets into the underworld. I don't think there's really much that examines that sort of thing in depth, glimpses sure, but not a real focus of things.

- A show entirely about the aftermath of The Last Jedi, particularly about the Resistance. There's so much TLJ set up but there's one thing in particular that was important. At the end of TLJ the Resistance is reduced down to a tiny handful in an old smuggler's freighter. The Resistance building themselves back up to pre-TLJ levels should take years of work and is ripe for material. Unfortunately Rise of Skywalker fails to even put in so much a throwaway line and just puts the Resistance back to pre-TLJ, a consequence of the really REALLY bad and unnecessary attempt to pretend The Last Jedi never happened. Maybe a series could help fix that by actually providing that explanation, among other things.

We’ve got a novel and a comics mini-series, so that’s a start. (Although some of the movie’s other ancillary media contradicts one of the novel’s big story points.)
