Firing into a melee during a 3-way Battle?

By Mad Maximus, in Rules

Good morning all,

My twin sons & I have gotten into 3-way Scrimmage Battles. Obviously modifying the rules slightly is simple enough, but a few items have come up to question...

Should it be alright to fire into a melee fight between the other 2 teams? Assuming the reason one would not fire into a melee, is the fear of hitting your own teammates. But what about when all involved in the melee are enemies? And how would you handle damage distribution?

Example: Rebel Wookies & Chewbacca are engaged in melee with Republic Clones & Captain Rex. Separatist Count Dooku approaches the melee & opens up with his lightning attack. Should the damage be distributed evenly between all engaged units? Dooku then engages into the melee & lightsaber attacks only the adjacent unit?

Thoughts? Or any questions on how we handle other rules when it comes to a 3-way Battle?

My gut reaction would be to say that you still cant fire into engagements becuase it would create a lot of weird rules interactions. For instance, how would Dooku's scatter keyword on his lightning work on engaged units?

I can see how thematically that makes little sense, so you could say that damage is divided as equally as possible by the attacker and then create rules for how specific key words interact in that scenario.

From a meta game perspective it disincentivizes melee engagements becuase you lose a measure of the protection that melee normally provides.

A unit that is engaged cannot be targeted by a ranged attack (page 40). You can house rule it but I'd just leave it as is for simplicity's sake.

IMO in a 3 way fight at home...shooting into a melee between the other 2 players should be perfectly ok.

Something like pick a target...roll a red attack dice, if you get a hit/crit...the shots hit the intended target...a miss means the other person. (then roll attack dice normally along with all other rules) Even reduce the range of weapons by 1 for shooting into melee to balance things a little?

For an at home game it dosnt feel right to not be able to shoot at two enemies fighting each other with sticks.

That is how we've handled it so far (about a dozen games). But every time, the 3rd party wants to shot into the melee claiming "I don't care who I hit". So I figured that I'd throw it out here & see if anyone has dealt with it or had some good idea for it.

Maybe allow it to shoot into melee but you cannot apply weapon keywords if you do so? This way you could avoid most rule problems and melee is still somewhat protecting the engaged troopers.
