Bringing Back an Old Racing Game (PbP Recruitment)

By Rabobankrider, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all!

So a while back I tried to run a pbp game set on Corellia. The game was a racing game where the party were team looking to become legends on the racing circuit of the system. Unfortunately the game died before its time as we lost most of the players to inactivity. However! I have decided the game died before its time, and that it is time to try and bring it back!

So, if anyone is interested in a bit of a different star wars game, let me know! There's lot of options for players here, as it takes all types to make a successful racing team. Racers, doctors, security, mechanics, managers, promotors are all some of the options for the game. Players will have to navigate the difficult and often dangerous world of racing, gathering funds for the legitimate and elitist races, or sinking into the darker depths of underground racing run by criminal groups and gangs. There's a lot of ways this game can go.

I'd like to join, probably play a Besalisk Technician. However, I am already involved in a few PbPs, so will step aside if you have anybody who ends up on a waiting list as I don't want to prevent someone from getting into it.

Well a technician will always be welcome in a racing game! I've recently got the rules for ship building so you guys may well get a chance to make use of that, and if there's a collisions someone will nee to fix the craft up. As far as I'm concerned you are welcome in the game. :)

Not finished with the backstory and stuff yet, but here's what I've got so far. https://swsheets.com/c/uywjhw7wv-undecided-wip

I assume we're using standard CharGen rules, no bonus XP/credits?

Actually as this is going to potentially be a continuation of the old game ( @Shlambate and @Edgehawk may be re-joining or making new characters), you will start with 20 extra xp. You also get 8,000 credits to spend on a vehicle (this is a vehicle focused game after all), however left over credits aren't saved.

If this is a new game, I'm very interested. If it's not, then not really.

How does this work? If everybody gets a vehicle in a racing game, is this a very PVP-based set-up?

Would you be willing for me to keep this sort of in reserve as a swoop crafting budget? He isn't qualified to drive one of the things, so I don't think it makes sense for him to start out with a vehicle, though building one for his favorite racer to use (or to try to sell to a big-shot racer to boost his profile) would fit. Narratively, it would basically be him acquiring pieces and parts to build his own, and would take place over a period of time rather than being right from the get-go. He'd get up to 8,000 to build the thing, including any scrapped components (like if he had to retry an engine). Then once he's out, he can spend more credits to continue.

I'll add in the 20 XP.

@micheldebruyn , the game was still fairly early days, and will effectively still be a new game as the crew try to make it as racers. The players will be on the same team, though they can have more than one racer. Vehicles will be useful for other tasks and give the players greater autonomy while on Corellia. As the characters have established lives already, it makes sense that they have a home and vehicle.

@P-47 Thunderbolt , sure that sounds fine to me.

Fair enough.

What's already in the party, and are what books can be used for character creation?

Also, what time is this set in?

Here's what I've got so far. I still need to work on filling out the Obligation, though (aside from the name). https://swsheets.com/c/uywjhw7wv-undecided-wip

@micheldebruyn , assuming @Edgehawk and @Shlambate keep their old characters, there is a human operator, and a cerean technician. All books are available, however this is not a force/jedi orientated game, so I will need a good reason as to why a character is force sensitive. I believe I put the year as the year after the rise of the republic, so 19 BBY.

@P-47 Thunderbolt , all looks good so far, I like the npc's you've included there so we can be sure to see them in the game. :)

I assume you mean fall of the Republic? I thought it was later, so I've actually got to rework the bit about Boles Roor a little bit to make it chronologically accurate. Might also mean lowering his age, which I probably should do anyway...

Yay! I'll work on fleshing out his family a bit more. How much input do you want to have into that?

Haha, nope, this is a whole new divergence from cannon! But seriously, I did mean fall of Republic, yeah. With backstory, the more you put in, the more will show up in the game. If I see anything that does need changing, I'll let you know.

I'm interested!!! I would love to be a manager or promoter. Kinda the face of the business. I am a little new to pbp, but am very active and will not just quit on you.

@jhh3 , good to hear! Manager/promoter types will have a big impact in the game, especially deciding the route that the team takes. Will they be willing to deal with bribes and sabotage in the underworld of racing, or do they stay above all that and make life harder for themselves? If you let me know what kind of spec/species you are looking to play, we can get you started.

@Rabobankrider, human, and yes he is totally willing to work with the underworld. He hopes to one day get enough money to become a manager to another racing team on a high end planet. So he doesn't really care much about the team just himself, maybe that will change as the story progresses.

@jhh3 , ok cool! If you want to make a start on a sheet on swsheets we can get you added into the game.

The first idea that comes to mind is a Force-sensitive character (not connected to the Jedi, not even slightly interested in being a Jedi, ever owning a lightsaber, or using spectacular high damage Force powers, meditating a lot, or going on about destiny and stuff); a rogueish, carefree character who just loves flying swoops at ridiculous speeds, and is very good at that, and somehow got roped into racing.

Sentinel/Racer seems to fit best, maybe eventually branching out to Artisan.

@micheldebruyn , sounds interesting, just be aware if your force sensitivity is discovered, there will be repercussions involved. That's not necessarily a bad thing story wise, but it is something to consider. Force powers will also be limited initially to the basic variety (EotE types) to show the lack of training. However you may be able to improve on that later in the future. :)

Back to the drawing board then.

If you're still looking for people I'd love to be a part of this. I've wanted to do something similar to this for years (on play-by-post RP forums but I always wanted to add stats in too). Assuming you're willing to let another person join I'd be down to make a racer for the team. Not too sure on a proper character concept just yet but I'd probably lean towards an Ace or going with the driver specialization for Explorer.

Ok! I will start!

@micheldebruyn , you can do a force user if you want, it is just unfortunately that this is still a very force-huntery time period.

@rocketrobie2 , I'm sure the team would appreciate a second racer to join (assuming @Edgehawk is going to stick with their racer).

It's more that you seem to be hung up on having a teacher, something which has never happened to a Force-sensitive PC of mine in the last 30 years. Takes the fun right out of it.
