Deflect and Surge Tokens

By zeitzef, in Rules

I played in a tournament today, where the flavour of the month seemed to be Obi-wan and a cloud of Clone Troopers.

It would seem they would generate a large pile of surge tokens on Obi-wan and then use Deflect or Soresu Mastery against an attack and spend the surge tokens to inflict wounds back to the attacker. is this correct? Can you use Surge tokens while using deflect?

Doesn't the use of a dodge token that procs deflect already give surge:block I think the surge tokens are pointless then. If they are using surge tokens to change surges to blocks without spending a dodge token that does not count as deflect.

You have to spend a dodge in order to activate Deflect. And when you use Deflect you also gain surge:block, so there's no reason to spend surge tokens. It sounds like they were playing it incorrectly. Spending surge tokens without spending a dodge does not issue wounds back to the attacker.

It sounds like everyone had no idea how surge token work. They don't give you surge results. They let you flip surge results on a die to hits or blocks.

Yep, lotta misplays. Surge tokens and Deflect don't interact. At best, surge tokens are a passive defense on Obi, allowing him to spend a token after a result has been rolled, where Deflect requires it to be spend before you know what you're facing.

Minor quibble, but I've noticed players in my group conflating Deflect and Soresu Mastery . They are not the same thing.

Soresu is better as it can deal wounds from surge results during any type of attack, melee or ranged, whereas Deflect only deals wounds on ranged attacks.

As stated above, neither interacts with surge tokens .

ok so surge tokens do not count as a result and therefore cannot be used to deflect.

that's more or less what i figured but wanted to make sure thanks.

No problem, happy to help!

I just want clarify one thing though: it’s not about the results in this case. The important part is that a dodge token wasn’t spent. You have to spend a dodge token to turn on deflect, then the results will matter.
