An odd little interaction.

By Memorare, in Rules

So playing with a friend and we ran into this odd little interaction....

So Grievous' pip 2 card reads

General Grievous gains 1 surge token for each friendly trooper unit at range 1. While another friendly trooper unit has a faceup order token, it gains Guardian 2 and can use Guardian during a melee attack.

but in the rules you cant...

A unit cannot use guardian x if the defender also has the guardian x keyword.

So if you give Grievous a faceup Order he can't benefit from Guardian until he activates. That's seems very odd, doesnt it?

"Another."

To clarify the point, Grievous does not gain guardian from that command card, only other Trooper units with faceup order tokens gain guardian.

Yup. My point is if you give ole Grievy a faceup order, he doesn't get the benefit initially. I caught me out, as I'd given him one for activation control. I'm not saying it's a bad rule, just odd.

I don't think you are reading what we are writing. His card only gives Guardian to "another friendly trooper unit." It does not give it to Grievous.

Yeah, it's not that Grievous can't use Guardian with this card, it's that he doesn't get Guardian from this card at all. The word "another" means that it only applies to Trooper units other than Grievous.

Hmmm

If you're sure, neat! Thanks. Tho it's an oblique way to write it on the card in my defence.

Its a pretty standard bit of terminology for wargames.
