Need help, I messed up big time !!! ( spoilers for Eye for an Eye)

By Decaramas, in WFRP Gamemasters

So we started playing the Eye for an Eye campaign and everything was going well, then came the beastman attack on the coach. I got the rules for henchmen very wrong and instead of adding their toughness together I added their HP, making them very hard to kill.

Add to this the rules for a repeater crossbow was used for a normal crossbow ( 4 actions to reload) and they didn't stand a chance, now they did survive but with a lot of critical wounds, even after a rally step they are not in good condition and wont make it thorough any more combat.

These errors were discovered after the session.

So any ideas on how I put this right ? They have almost finished the investigation and I could give them a few hours before the dinner. So i was thinking another rally step and have the Sister come in and bless them before dinner.

Could Aschaffenberg have a couple of Healing Draughts handy for them? No more than one each of course. Perhaps he serves them from his special bottle during dinner (making dinner not all bad!).

Have you not told the players you messed up?

At any rate, just allow them to heal their wounds either using draughts, first aid, resilience checks or whatever is on hand. If they don't have the skills or items handy then use the Physician. It's not crucial to the story that the doctor be completely incompetent, so he could treat the players, in the hopes of gaining their trust before the ritual is completed. The players will probably suspect less of the doctor if he turns out to be good at what he does, which will make things interesting later on.

Don't cure them and give them some schlaff. You'll end up with the same issue.

You could say you messed up, and use that as a reason to remove some of their wounds and crits.

Alternatively, you could turn Sister Sonja into a real priest and heal them or something. Also, if they've found a lot of clues, they might be able to prevent the ritual, making the end a lot easier. Or lose the beastmen attack.

But personally, I'd fess up and fix the damage done directly.

It's probably best to tell them you made a mistake, and return some wounds and criticals for free. Otherwise if you enable them to heal up extra wounds or find a healing potion or two and not tell them why. Then the next time they enter a battle and come away with much less wounds than last time they may realise something was not right about the first battle, and will wonder why that battle was so much harder than any other battle they have done since.

So best to tell them, than for them to realise that you made a mistake and tried to cover it up.

Just my two-peneth worth!
