A.I clarification

So how does A.I exactly work?

I kind of don't get it

If the unit with AI doesn't have a face up order token and when they activate they can do the AI action as the first action, they must do it. For example, you activate a B1 unit at range 3 and in line of sight of an enemy unit, they must attack as their first action. If when they activate they don't have any legal target, then they can make any action you choose as they can't attack as their first action.

And this is also if it is sub optimal so for example of you had a speeder bike type unit with nothing in its front arc they would have to shoot their target in in another arc with their pistols.

so does A.I only apply if their order token was drawn from the pool or a case when the units would be getting their order token at that moment so they can activate?

Yes, it only counts if the order is being drawn from the pool, aka, the unit is assigning the order to itself. If you are issuing them an order from your command card, an ability like Entourage, or even HQ Uplink, they don't suffer the same limitation.

Thematically, it's because the droids are only programmed with certain responses to things. You can order them to do other things, but in the event the unexpected happens, they fall back on their main programming and start shooting. Think the hanger scene with Qui-Gon and the droid officer. "Uh...Courscant, that doesn't compute, uhh, wait, uhh, you're under arrest!"

Being drawn at random is NOT equivalent to a unit issuing an order to itself.

Yes. That has nothing to do with issuing orders. Orders (face up order tokens) are issued after you and your opponent play your command cards. Then everything else gets put in the bag. When you draw a token, you activate something of that rank. The range 3 restriction is only for issuing orders, and only counts for an Operative if you play one of their specific command cards (they can't be nominated if you play a generic command card, like Push).

Also note that if the unit is equipped with any weapons that have a range greater than 3 (sniper and Rocket Launcher) and the unit has an enemy within that range, then the unit would have to attack with only that weapon.

Heres a new question for A.I.. In the RR the third pip says, "If a unit cannot perform one of its listed actions as its first action, it is free to perform actions as normal."(bolding mine)

The filthy casual in me wants to say this is a wording mistake but the rules lawer in me wants to say that this means that can choose an action that you cannot perfom to get your turn as normal.

If you flip the wording, "If a unit can perform one of the listed (AI) actions, then it is not free to perform actions as normal." it makes sense. I would agree that replacing the word "one" with the word "either" would make it clearer. It would at least prevent the rules lawering you suggested.

To be super extra rules lawyery, I would suggest using "any" instead of "either," since "either" implies exactly two options, and currently only the Droideka has two options.

That is a good point.

You know, initially I was going to argue this, but now I'm kind of curious. I'm not actually sure of a scenario where it would be beneficial to attempt this, but it would be interesting to see what the rules guys said.

As for the lack of scenario, let me explain: The droidekkas have Attack, Move. I'm not sure there is a situation where they would be mechanically prevented from movement, as in I want to move them, but I cannot. At the least I would think Pivot would be very hard to prevent. so onto attack. if you're out of range of any targets, then what? Dodge then move? which is only slightly different from move dodge, but with Sentinel and the crazy standby things the clones can do i can see that. what else is there at the moment?
