Transmogrifier's Rebels (update 12/28/20)

By Transmogrifier, in Painting

Ha! You should then have Vader force choke a couple of Imperials for incompetence (for leaving the intel behind) at the start of the game just for theatrics

Do you have a group shot of the whole army together? Seems like it would be stunning, especially if you have a matching battlefield.

@ClassicalMoser I'm still working on the battlefield side of things but here's a shot I have of a 500 point skirmish build. I only managed to get these guys on the table once pre-Corona and we had a bunch of proxy terrain, so no epic battlefield pics for now. I've been (slowly) building up some more terrain from supplies I have on hand though - here are a few items. The building still needs a door but @ZealuxMyr is my 3d print supplier so I've had to just work with supplies I have on hand for now.

I went with a traditional Endor scheme for Han. I had considered following the pea dot camo scheme I used on my Commandos, but I wanted Han to stand out as a unique character, with the emphasis on him and not his coat. I pointedly avoided this sort of camo style on my Commandos since it's so much work to look good, but I had nothing but time so it was fun to go outside my usual comfort zone.

Time for an interlude. I ran out of stuff to paint and nobody local has anything relevant in-stock, so I volunteered to paint some of @ZealuxMyr 's (enormous and shameful) backlog of Rebels to keep myself entertained. I've been trying to use this as an opportunity to push myself to be more prolific and less precious about my paint jobs. I've been aiming for basecoat + shade as the general standard for non-characters and we'll see where I land for characters. I picked up an army's worth of models last Tuesday and I've been able to get these two units finished so far (along with a good chunk of the rest assembled, based and primed). I'm still trying to figure out a good pace that will be sustainable but the exercise has been good for me so far.

I wanted to do a different scheme for these guys as a change of pace. Based on the paints and basing materials I had on-hand, I stuck with the same set of military greens and browns, just arranged differently and moved to a Lothal/Dantooine inspired basing to use the only other color of static grass I had on-hand. I'm liking the contrast so far. Note: I haven't hit these with matte varnish yet so they are a little shiny in the pictures.

I've been keeping up the pace - Rebel Pathfinders and Leia finished up. Just one more unit to go and this is a legal 800 point army (!)

Quick video of the full army ^ (can't figure out a way to embed :|)

I love the sort of permafrost basing that you have going on, I'd love to know how you did it. It looks fantastic!

Basing is:

Vallejo Model Color Khaki base with VMC Buff dry brush, Citadel Agrax Earthshade (thinned 1:1 with water). Then Gale Force 9 โ€œWinter/Deadโ€ static grass glued on top. Base rim is VMC US Dark Green.

After cranking out an army in 6 weeks I'm back to my own army and a more...deliberate...pace.

Such a bold color scheme. And you have pulled it off very, very well!

I'm back! @ZealuxMyr was kind enough to run me a Dash Rendar print for a competition so this was a nice push to get out of my slump and back to painting. I wanted to give Dash the full 90's treatment and match the comic art style where he's perpetually lit from below with orange light. This was the most effort I've put into lighting effects/glazing to-date I'm happy with how he came out. I think I spent more time fighting with my phone camera than I did with the face ๐Ÿ˜

Looks like a version of flash Gordon

The comics definitely had that sort of vibe - here's some of the pictures I was using as inspiration

Kind of looks like Duke Nukem too

This is probably going to be the last project I post here - thanks for everybody who has stopped by, I'm sure we'll see each-other on the various Facebook groups!

Wrapping things up on a high note with a special mini. A friend of mine was gracious enough to pick up one of the limited edition Luke Skywalkers from our not-so-local-to-me store and mail it to me. I had zero expectation of ever getting my hands on one (I'd guess there are less than 10 in the entire state?) so this was a very pleasant surprise. I was tempted to match my Lah'mu scheme and go with the blaster + no helmet option to make him fit in with my army as well as possible (and also to save myself from having to free-hand the helmet markings...), but knowing how special the model was, I decided to go with the classic Hoth look and to try and match the scene from the film - meaning lightsaber + helmet with the visor up (i.e. hard mode). I'd estimate I put about 15 hours into the overall paint job.

note: my hand is in the frame to force my phone to get the colors right.
