Simple house rule for Slower Level Progression.
Instead of handing out xp in increments of 1's. Convert the cost to 100's. Then xp rewards are handed out inline with previous versions of the game. A typical adventure would warrant 100-200xp on average. Not a huge change but it allows you to hand out xp in steps so 150xp for example. You can also do a more detailed break down of the session 25xp for overcoming each obstacle, 25xp for good role playing, 50xp for saving the princes etc....
