New board expansion, maybe?

By Tibs, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

The Devils Hopyard is a real place too.

It's possible they were referring to the Arkham Horror Dice Game, which is supposed to be coming out at some point this year or next (unofficially, as of this point, though I heard it from a reliable source who knows Richard Launius). Presumably it will include some kind of board in addition to the dice, so that could be what they meant.

Or it could indeed be another big box expansion. Regardless, I'll buy it, and that's really the bottom line for FFG... if we keep buyin' em', they'll probably keep makin' 'em.

Arkham Horror is already a dice game...

I haven't heard of this. Do you know anything else about it?

I wouldn't really call that a rumor, more like a personal prediction. Without any specifics (none were given), it's no different than saying any other game will get another expansion.

It was described with a few details over at Fortress Ameritrash. The search function there doesn't work very well, so I can't find the thread right now... it may have actually been pulled, because the person wasn't supposed to divulge anything about it yet. But someone who knows Richard Launius very well (several people at that site game with him regularly) had said that an agreement was reached for an Arkham Horror dice game to be published by FFG sometime in the next year or so, and another person had described watching some people play it. I can't remember any details, really, but I think it uses a series of dice with different face sides, and you re-roll them like in Yahtzee and try to get certain combinations, which will accomplish different things. Vague, I know, but that's all I can offer, really. I had pressed for more information about it, but then the guy who had posted that was told he shouldn't have said anything. I probably shouldn't say anything now, either, eh? :o) But suffice to say, it should be announced officially at some point.

I did hear about the dice game via a thread on BGG. If it's not an expansion that'll suck a little, but I'd still be interested if it tells a good story.

Maybe It might be a campaign expansion?

That would be cool (Even though setting up let alone playing with all of the expansions is kinda like a campaign at the moment)

I definitely wouldn't be disappointed by another city/town expansion though.

Providence Horror, with HPLs circle as allies?

The more I think about it, the more I think Grudunza may have been right. The guy at the store might have considered the item to be an expansion when it may have been the dice game.

I can still hope though ;)

You hope. I'll be skeptical.

That's disappointing. Logic would probably go against a "mysterious" new board, since the Big Four have already appeared. I'll judge it on its own merits...but it's a dice game.

A dice game isn't necessarily a bad thing. To one end, AH itself is kind of a dice game. One flaw with AH is that it doesn't tell a coherent story that plays out like a typical Lovecraft tale. A dice game might have the potential, where dice might randomly (or weighted random) determine the path of the tale.

Dice game I think they're mistaking the AH-themed dice set for a separate game.

Boards... I'd like to see a replacement for the base set, with another city as the base. Kingsport, Cairo, London...

What I'm referring to is neither the custom dice set, nor the Cthulhu dice game by Steve Jackson... it's an entirely new Arkham Horror themed dice game by Richard Launius. I don't know when it will be announced officially by FFG, but I have it on good authority that it's going to be published at some point.

I retrack my ealier comment about the amount of expansions. Everyone has added at least one great element to the game. As long as the quality remains at par I'll be a loyal cultist and scarfice as many dead presents and other historical figures as needed.

Well, I have it on good authority that internet rumours are generally exactly that: rumours.

Hopefully, the Pass condition will be satisfied ::laughing::

Anyway, I'd love to see a different game in the AH style. A new board for the Mountains of madness or for the Dreamland, detatched from the base game, but with the same mechanics and thus some components that can be used in both games (i.e. investigators from AH can be used even in the new game and viceversa; same stuff for AO, and so on)

Maybe with Arkham will happen something similar to what happened for A game of thrones: being the boardgame not being expandable by further expansions, they used the same wordl / story for launch a different series of game (the Battle of the westeros series). Would be fun to investigate in the Micronesia island, or in the Cairo or whatelse, even in different ages

And I'd love to see a series of expansions expanding the "other" boards, I mean an expansion expanding Dunwich, one expanding Innsmouth, and so on. I know they aren't new boards, so sorry for the little OT

As good of authority as someone who lives in Atlanta and is good friends with Richard Launius and plays games with him every week and has seen this dice game played in person??

Proof that this guy knows Richard or that this rumor is true or it never happened.

Coming up with stories is easy.

Hey! My uncle's friend's brother's wife is a friend of Kevin Wilson's wife's uncle's friend and he told me that she told him that Kevin Wilson told her that he told him that he told her that her told him who told me there's a collector's edition of Arkham in the works.

Coming up with stories is easy. Backing them up is a whole other business.

Thank you for the lesson in dishonesty, Kroen.

That being said, I trust Grudunza to not be making up fairy tales, but ::shrug:: I wouldn't count on the release of any product until it's actually announced (and sometimes even not then).

Backup = Spend any appreciable time at all on this site (which I referenced earlier in regards to this): http://fortressat.com/ Several people there are good friends with Richard and have weekly game sessions with him, sometimes at his house, and there were several pictures posted there a couple months ago of them all playing together at a gaming weekend held in Atlanta. Suffice to say, the information is reliable and the same news about Defenders of the Realm being published was discussed there well before its official announcement. As I said before, I believe the original thread about the AH dice game being published was removed because of the details it included, as I can't seem to find it now. But here's a brief reference to it (scroll down to the section about "Marvel Smackdown"): http://fortressat.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1433&Itemid=0

Ah wait, I just found the thread: http://fortressat.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=712&func=view&catid=10&id=49529 You'll notice that I had asked whether it was co-op or competitive and didn't get a response in the thread from the original poster, but I was sent a private message shortly thereafter explaining that he couldn't divulge anything more about it until it was publically announced.

Good enough for ya? Now granted, I'm not saying for sure that the thing the store owner was referring to (if there's any truth to that) is this dice game... only that it might possibly be that, as opposed to another big box expansion.

It would be very sloppy to leak information like this before a public announcement. Unless I am mistaken, test players generally have to sign an NDA. Spreading that kind of information regardless is a sure way to get into trouble, especially if the number of people with access to the information is small.

I don't doubt for a second that the store owner in question _believes_ to have seen something. I just doubt that it actually is what he thinks it was.

You heard it, guys, we can start trusting everyone :) and while we're at it, let's allow our future (or current) children to message with strangers over the internet and let them meet up :)

No. Just no.
