New board expansion, maybe?

By Tibs, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So...... a place I used to visit in Albany, NY (actually the same place I bought my Dark Pharaoh and 1st ed. Arkham Horror) says that there are two upcoming Arkham expansions... one card, then one board (!!!!).

If this rumor turns out to be true... does anyone have any ideas what the next board could be?

Hmm.... ;)

Pittsburgh Horror

Arkham Horror Horror: The Metagame. In which your investigators actually play Arkham Horror. Naturally, this drains both their money and their Sanity, but it also gives them the opportunity to pick up valuable tactical skills, which they can use against the mythos.

ANOTHER board? Oh dear x__x Part of me wishes that this is true, and another part of me wishes that this is false. Mostly the part of me that worries about finances, and the size of the ping-pong table where we play our games.

I've seen several people mention that 'The Mountains of Madness' would make a good expansion, so maybe FFG has picked up on that. Though the name seems to suit a small box expansion better. All the big boxes have been titled '(Insert Lovecraftian town here) Horror.' I don't see why they'd break that pattern now. Maybe 'Providence Horror?' It's the only named city in a Lovecraft story that I can currently think of that hasn't been used. It's from the story 'The Shunned House.' However, Providence is a real city, Lovecraft's hometown no less. The story was actually based on a real house near where his aunt lived. I'm doubtful that they'd make a game based on that though...

Interesting question...

If they were keeping with the same small town themes

"The Horror at Redhook" might be a good one. Small town, filled with Cultists. It would keep with the "Small Town" feel of Kingsport and Innsmouth

"The soul of the beast is omnipresent and triumphant, and Red Hook's legions of blear-eyed, pockmarked youths still chant and curse and howl as they file from abyss to abyss, none knows whence or whither, pushed on by blind laws of biology which they may never understand. As of old, more people enter Red Hook than leave it on the landward side, and there are already rumours of new canals running underground to certain centres of traffic in liquor and less mentionable things. " The Horror at Red Hook

There are a couple other stories, If they decided to take it a different direction there is a lot of things they could do with other dimensions "The Nameless City" "Mountains of Madness" but i think Redhook would be the best, Plus I like the idea of a cultist themed town.. not that there is a lack of that currently, but it might create the opportunity for some more interesting thematic Heralds and AOs... Cultists getting progressively worse with the terror track, etc.

Huh, I hadn't thought of Red Hook. Shame on me. It has a nice ring to it though, I like the idea.

Though it's across the ocean, a Severn Valley board has a lot of potential. And I've described many times about a potential oceanic movement between boards that could be employed towards multiple "isolated" areas (Egypt, Antarctica, Severn Valley).

Then again, everyone keeps raving about a Dreamlands extension, so who knows? It could just be a misunderstanding after all.

PLEASE no more big box expansions, PLEASE. In fact, please no more small box expansions after Lurker, either. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the game but it's starting to get a bit out of control. Wait a sec, did I say "bit"? I meant TON. 7 expansions is more than enough. No really, it is more than enough, 6 would have been fine. We have enough content as it is, do we REALLY need more? For the love of Cthulhu stop the madness! When I started playing there was only Dunwich and Dark Pharaoh. I would NEVER have started playing if I gotten into it to day. I would have been overwhelemed by the number of expansions and give it up all together. This is why I would never get into Runebound, Descent, Battle Lore and the other games with gazillion expansions. I'm already deep into Arkham, owning all expansions, so it's too late for me, so PLEASE stop madness! PLEASE!!! If there will be more expansions I will HAVE to buy them and I'm broke!!! No moar!!!

I REALLY hope this rumor turns out to be true.

Funny thing about this is that I remember visiting a local hobby store and they told me about an Arkham Horror expansion that was not even announced yet.The "rumor" turned out to be true and it turned into the Lurker expansion.

Keep the expansions coming!!I can NEVER get enough!!

Redhook Horror has a nice ring to it. Townshend is a place that features more than once in Lovecraft stories and I believe it's a real place (just looked it up and yes it is). Most noteable was The Whispers in the Darkness which has a theme that could make for a great small town/mythos plot.

I agree that the expansions are getting out of controll but if there is going to be another big box board expansion Red Hook makes the most sense, I say let them relase Lurker and a one big box then STOP!!!!

I don't mind. I'm a bit of a completionist, but I like picturing Arkham Horror as a kind of RPG, and most RPG's are designed to be modular and expandable. As such, all you are doing is plugging in new modules, and running the full game is akin to running an entire campaign.

Could be a town they made up to throw together stories that don't take place in any definate location, like the ghoul story or the one where the guy hallucinates a party in an old house. I really need to read LC again....

I also wonder if its a board for separate locations you can go to where the rest of the city is unimportant like the hotel Erich Zann was in or the house in Whisperer. We might also get to go into Y'hanethlai (?) though that seems unlikely.

It seems to me though, that they already tapped into Erich Zann when they made Patrice. He was a violinist whose music attracted the notice of the mythos. If you read Patrice's back story, it's pretty much the same scenario.

The more I think about it though, the more I like the idea of a Red Hook board. It'd be neat if it did something with the labyrinthine sewers and waterways under the city. And hurray, that'd mean more support for aquatic movement!

Why would anyone want them to stop making expansions? No one forces you to buy any of them. If you buy a videogame system, do you force yourself to buy every single game they put out? Just buy what you want, ignore what you don't want.

I just got into this game a month ago. I'm way behind on expansions, with only CotDP and the DH that I just got but haven't tried yet. I'll get the rest when I get them, it's no big deal. And it's not like I've just been playing this casually by myself. In 4 weeks, I've played 13 times with 1-4 other people. I'm playing again tonight, and I can't wait to get out of work to do so. But I would never want them to stop making more, even though I'm still 5 expansions behind. The more they make means people are buying it, which means new potential people to play with since this game is still getting support and is out there. If they were to stop making more, eventually the interest dies down, and the game dies with only the hardcore players left to support it, as new games make their way into the spotlight. And I don't want to see that happen. I just got this game and I want to see it go on for a long time.

I TOTALLY 100% agree with you DoomTurtle.

I know that I will any expansion that they put out for Arkham Horror even if they do 7 more expansions.

It is by far my favorite board game of all time and I will continue to support it!!

Keep them coming FFG!!!

You don't get it, do you? I've already said I love Arkham Horror. If there will be new expansions I will HAVE to buy them otherwise I'll be feeling I'm missing something. That's exactly what I felt befefore I had all expansions. So I will buy them, but I would rather they wouldn't be made at all so I won't need to. With Lurker, that's 7 expansions. I think that's enough. 48 investigators, 24 Ancient Ones, 160 monsters, hundreds and hudreds of items, hundreds of mythos cards, hundreds of other world location cards, hundrets upon hundrets of atkham location cards... you can't tell me that's not enough. For people woh have all current expansions, I've doubt you even encountered 50% of the other world/arkham encounters. There's still soooo much to experience with what we currently have. There is such thing as too much of a good thing, IMHO. The watering down of expansions is already huge as it is, and new expansions won't help.

But, unless expansions see a huge dropoff in quality, I will always buy them with fervor! "Watering down" of expansions doesn't bother me at all. If it's being watered down with new material, then that's a plus! Theme dilution has never been an issue for me; mechanics dilution has. And I've already come up with simple anti-dilution rules that anticipate and counter mechanics dilution for new expansions, so I'm all set.

Of course, if the number of boards and theme dilution gets to be too much for some people, then they can always play: one big box, one small box. I've heard this works really well.

Bring on the new stuff, ad infinitum! I will stop buying only when Arkham goes the way of the Catapult!

HEAR HEAR!

Yer darn skippy. I've had the game since it was released, and it's been my favorite game (solo AND social) for years. Nothing makes me happier than to see new players start on the same path I followed.

And I will always want more, because even 1 new Ancient One, Investigator, Herald, or mechanic brings another umpteen game combinations. May Arkham Horror stave off stagnation for as long as possible.

If this rumor is true (how reliable is your source, TIbs?), bring it on, FFG!

I still haven't been able to play a solo game yet. Technically I bought this game as a replacement game for HeroQuest. My friends and I would play HQ all the time when we were younger, we had all the expansions and everything. Then about a year ago, we got it back out and started playing it again. Well, getting the same group together on a consistent basis started getting tougher and tougher. Then when one of the guys moved away, that pretty much put the kibosh on that. Then I got Dokapon Kingdom for the Wii (and if you have a Wii, you may want to look into it, it's kind of a mix of Mario Party, Monopoly, and a turn-based RPG, where you get equipment, level up, build up your property and wealth, and try to stab everyone else in the back) which was great fun, but again, getting people over to play on a consistent basis is tough to do. So then I went to the tabletop gaming message board of hte videogame sight Gamefaqs.com. That's where I first heard about Arkham Horror and started to do some research.

I started to read the rules, discovered these message boards, and came upon the revelation that this game would be the perfect replacement for HeroQuest! For several reasons:
1) This game had the exploration, equipment, magic, and monster fighting that HQ had.
2) Whereas HQ had a limited number of "quests" that could be played (unless you made your own), the number of investigators, AOs, encounter cards, and expansions ensured that this game would always be different.
3) The game concluded at the end of each session, and with up to 8 players, no need to bring in the same people time after time in order to continue play.
4) Most importantly, this game did not need a Dungeon/Game Master to control the bad guys, so I could finally join my friends team!

So when the game finally arrived last month, my friends were pumped to play it, while my wife was sick of hearing me go on and on about it. So the night I was setting up to play a solo game, she caved in and said she would give it a try. Well, you can guess how she felt about it if I haven't been able to play a solo game yet. She now plays everytime my friends come over and will even go with me to other's house to play (which she wouldn't normally do because she doesn't want to intrude on us guys). In fact, our first anniversary was last weekend, and she got me Dunwich Horror.

So anyway, sorry for the long post, just thought I'd bust in with my "personal story" since I plan to be around for a long time. Last, just thought I'd say I'm super excited for tonight, it will be my first 6-player game. Although 3 noobies means I will still leave out DH so as to not overwhelm them, but I'll throw in CotDP as a permanent exhibit just to spice things up, and because I like it so much and want to keep using it. As a visiting exhibit, it's tough for only 2 investigators, still can't get a seal win. Those double doom cards are destroying us. May need to start controlling more than 1 investigator each soon.

How about an expansion that includes:

1) A revised 'master board' that clusters information closer without making the printed areas smaller in order to shave off some of its size.

2) A comprehensive revised rulebook.

3) Set of investigator minis for the base game.

4) Plastic tokens.

Release this as an upgrade expansion, then release the revised edition that includes this as standard further down the line, then release sets of minis for the other expansions, then release a huge collector's edition that includes a hardback rule book, revised board and plastic tokens, all minis and all material from the expansions for the hardcore fans in a massive book of the necronomicon (or similar tome).

1) This game had the exploration, equipment, magic, and monster fighting that HQ had.

Oodles and oodles. And even more oodles to come.

2) Whereas HQ had a limited number of "quests" that could be played (unless you made your own), the number of investigators, AOs, encounter cards, and expansions ensured that this game would always be different.

Agreed. In fact, that's almost an understatement. WILDLY different, from "Is the Ancient One paying attention?" to "PLEASE KILL ME!!! END THIS PAIN!!!"

3) The game concluded at the end of each session, and with up to 8 players, no need to bring in the same people time after time in order to continue play.

Although it sounds like some of your people WILL be there time after time. gui%C3%B1o.gif It is nice when everyone goes home with the same complete story, win or lose.

4) Most importantly, this game did not need a Dungeon/Game Master to control the bad guys, so I could finally join my friends team!

FOR. THE. WIN. The primary reason I picked up the game. Win together or lose together, nobody goes home gloating or grudging AGAINST each other.

So when the game finally arrived last month, my friends were pumped to play it, while my wife was sick of hearing me go on and on about it. aplauso.gifaplauso.gifaplauso.gifdemonio.gifaplauso.gif DELIGHTFUL!!! "Are you getting out Arkham Horror? Can I play? Can I? Huh? Can I?" We should all have so cool a Significant Other.

So anyway, sorry for the long post, just thought I'd bust in with my "personal story" since I plan to be around for a long time.

Thanks for sharing! Fantastic to hear. The Carnival never closes, so stay as long as you like. gran_risa.gif

Has this store been a reliable source of Arkham rumors in the past? I am having a hard time imagining what another town expansion could be. I would love to see "Whisperer in the Darkness" given its own expansion, but there's not enough town there for a big box.

On the other hand, the board expansions tend to be better than the small box ones. Of the small box ones, only King In Yellow really excels. Dunwich and Innsmouth are widely acclaimed as being excellent. So from that standpoint, we may be more satisfied by another board expansion than we'll be by Lurker. Who knows?

as lon as the expansion is good, im getting itgran_risa.gif

That's the best suggestion yet! It should be a herald which causes the investigators to be caught up in an Arkham Horror game while also trying to save Arkham directly. There could be a new small card deck of "Mythos Card Cards", tiny little versions of Mythos cards which force the investigators to become delayed in order to resolve a particularly difficult turn.

A friend of mine did have an idea for an expansion called something like "The Horror on the Games Shelf", which replaces the Other Worlds with other board games. "It's a gate to Monopoly!" And then your investigator has to go once around the Monopoly board before they can come back. Of course, gates to Monopoly can only be sealed with $2000 of Monopoly money, gates to Scrabble can only be sealed with seven-letter words, etc.

As for "Red Hook Horror" - Red Hook is also a real place, just like the city of Providence, so I think it's unlikely they'll use it.
