No plans for new physical product for Imperial Assault

By cnemmick, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

From the Q&A session at SW: Celebration today.

:(

Edit: I didn't catch the complete answer from the panel, but I believe more digital content coming for Campaign. Which is great!

If anybody transcribed the full answer, post it below and I'll edit my post to include it.

Edit 2: Thanks @jeffculligan & @maddwarfer for transcribing the whole response:

"We have a couple new things coming up for the app relatively soon that are going to be cooperative, kinda cooperative challenge-based maps, where the idea is you play through them as a group, and you receive a score at the end based on how you performed, so that you can replay them and try to get a better score. Those are a couple things that we currently have in the hopper right now for Imperial Assault. So as you can see, in the past year we almost exclusively focused all of our efforts on just making that app better and the cooperative experience better."

<Questioner pushed for an answer on physical products>

"We currently have nothing additional planned as a physical product for Imperial Assault. But that line obviously has approximately 60 physical products in it, so there's a wealth of content there, and a lot of the campaigns that we released as 1-vs-many campaigns, you can now play fully cooperative through the app as well. So there's a lot of opportunity to go back and revisit some of that material. At this moment we don't have any plans for additional physical products for Imperial Assault."

Added that digital content is coming for Campaign

So just waiting for the Order 66 article saying "Its been a great time making IA but sadly PEW PEW!!!!! arghhhhhhhh

Even if there was a 2nd edition you would expect a physical release to go alongside, especially the new card bits and a release to go alongside.

Sadly around where i am Legion killed the small base it had, as soon as that came out it was hard to get games

:(

Meaning they didn't announce any or they specifically said there were no plans for more physical product when asked directly what was planned for IA?

Heres the stream at the question and them dodging the answer

if it does not start its at 1m01 - just put the 2 parts together https://www.twitch.tv /videos/410494917?fbclid=IwAR3CLXpk_H-inIRrxzKlvwgD0rQKUwFW3g62aW94dxRncWQ86600wDAo-VE&t=00h01m01s

Not going to type it out word-for-word, but:

  • More for the app, including a "challenge" mode where you earn a score as you play.
  • " Nothing additional planned as a physical product for Imperial Assault ". Blah blah blah app! blah blah blah.

So at least now we know for sure, I guess.

Always going to be a bit narked they didn't bother with just one more wave (Yoda etc.) that would have made it feel finished, but it's actually something of a relief that they've at least decided to be honest about it now. No more wondering.

Probably means the tournament scene is dead (especially if they don't at least issue an FAQ update banning SC), but friendly skirmish and of course campaigns are still alive and well, as long as you can find a group for it.

My best attempt:

The (unclear) was "At this moment".

People have often talked about Armada and how they went long stretches without any announcements etc. If we study the history of Armada, did they at one time announce no products in testing, nothing being developed etc? I ask because after a long time of inactivity, and constant “competition” from a different but similar line (X-wing), eventually they did get more product. Also I think they are getting clone wars. Could there be a parallel for IA?

I'm not for sure about Armada, but I think a better parallel would be Descent.

This unfortunately has never even been the case for Armada. The SSD has apparently been under way for over 3 years, and now they're getting Clone Wars factions (just confirmed at Celebration). There's no future in IA Skirmish (or so it seems) but I generally only played campaign anyway. Guess I should give the app a try.

My best hope is that they'll do us the one small service of doing points rebalances. That's ALL it would take to make this game viable and fun again in the long term, especially since (without new releases) hitting the sweet spot once means it will stay there for posterity as long as we ignore the worthless printed costs on the cards.

At least I'm not sunk as deep into IA as a lot of the community here, but it was the one game that I've actually painted a significant number of figures for, and now it all feels like that time was more or less wasted. :(

The app is quite good, and getting better. I wouldn't feel like you wasted your time. You can enjoy this game for a long time. I, myself have started acquiring Legion figures to use them in IA. I'm hoping over time to get 90% of IA's pieces in Legion's scale. If IA is indeed going to pull the plug I might even start working on my own miniatures rules again, something that stays mathematically close to IA, but simplifies the rolling process and speeds up game play.

I knew the game would come to end, but to end it with those idiots from Rebels, sans Hera, and not on Endor is annoying. No Zuckuss of 4LOM but we have Dengar 🤢 No scout troopers. No Imperial army troopers. If there is not physical content, does that mean no Boba Fix, as that has been the medium for distributing skirmish fix cards?

Imperial Assault: Fourtytwo, help me take this marketing off.

Fourtytwo: But you'll die.

Imperial Assault: Nothing can stop that now. Just for once, let me look at you with my own eyes.

Fourtytwo, carefully removing all marketing and product development from the game, finally seeing it for what he always believed it was underneath all that - friendly, honest and inspiring.

Imperial Assault: Now… go, my fan. Leave me.

Fourtytwo: No, you're staying with me. I'll not leave you here, I gotta save you!

Imperial Assault: You already have, Fourtytwo. You were right. You were right about me. Tell everybody… you were right!

Fourtytwo: IA! I won't leave you!

And then, Imperial Assault dies, and a single tear runs down Fourtytwo's cheek as he bows his head in sadness.

Hmm, a challenge mode that keeps score?

Don't we already have that in the current version of app?

"Fame is a new concept in that determines the level of notoriety that the party has achieved. It is displayed to the right of the hero portraits on the log screen. It represents the players' score at the end of the campaign, so players can attempt to beat their high score the next time they play through the campaign."

Are they referring to a horde mode type of gameplay? If so, that would be a great addition for gaming groups that don't want to get invested in a new campaign.

So I just got IA and I played the app campaign. It was super fun but felt too short and ended rather abruptly. I hope they include all the boxed expansions for this app because at the moment I have The Bespin Gambit but can’t seem to do anything with its map tiles. ☹️

I’d even pay for them as DLC expansions if that meant they’d give this app some kind of proper priority. What about you guys?

Ive seen on these forums a couple times of a link being posted to some custom cards that are used as an AI opponent for the Imperials. Does anyone know if it included the Bespin expansion? It was by Redjakt. Any link to it would be greatly appreciated on my end.

It sounds an awful lot like the "Trials of Frostgate" DLC for the Descent 2E app. In essence it was an arcadish endless horde mode. It was definitely the least interesting one for the game. Perhaps it might work better with IAs gameplay, but if they don't make it more interesting somehow it's nothing to get excited about.

Maybe I’m just optimistic, but there is hope other physical things will come. For campaign, I’d be quite happy for them to get app campaigns caught up with what we currently have.

Skirmish might be in trouble if Legion gets more and more popular, but if another box comes, those card fixes are bound to be in it or the wave associated with it.

We can at least hope for them to add new digital campaigns for purchase the same way Mansions of Madness does. As has been mentioned elsewhere, there are plenty of existing forest tiles that could be used for an Endor campaign.

I was hoping for more than just forest tiles. I was hoping for some tree-top tiles with bridges that could double as Endor and Kashyyyk so we could get some more wookiee content. I'm sure I'll have to endure the inclusion of Ewoks, but that's the price one pays.

I don't share the optimism, but you are right. There is the possibility that we'll get something down the line. Maybe 2019 is the "Year of the app" with RtH and this next update that sounds like a retread of "Trials of Frostgate." I expect we'll get an HotE update either this winter or maybe spring of 2020. And maybe in late 2020 or early 2021 they'll throw us a bone with a box that gives us the Yoda and Scout troopers that us die-hards are craving, plus some card fixes to rebalance skirmish after SC. Or maybe a "no-box" box like this latest Descent expansion. Maybe it comes with the skirmish fixes and a new Core Box campaign book.

I know it's weird but the thing that bothers me the most is that we've got 21 heroes. It's such an ugly number for a game that is best played with 4 heroes. Give us 24. Give us 20. But dear God, why 21?

This may be the most compelling argument for another big-box (Endor/Death Star-themed) expansion 😂

Not sure I believe them. That Ewok on the map means something

Legion + Armada : “ Omae wa mou shindeiru”

IA : NANI?

It means they had a gap on the map that they needed to fill with art so they looked in their Star Wars jpegs folder and went "that'll do".
