Legend of the Five Rings Play by Post

Alright, I'm trained in that and have a 2 fire ring, so I can do this without explosions!

Fire 2 / Sentiment 1: Success, [blank], [blank]. weeping, keeps single Success .

1 Success v TN2 = Fail.

Evidently Hekasu was taught absolutely nothing to help him in his mission. I'm getting the feeling that it was more of "Uhh, go do a thing" than "Hekasu, you have trained and worked to achieve this position as my chief assistant, my hatamoto were I a man of standing. I have an important mission that I can entrust only to you..."

"That sounds like quite the celebration," Soji says, encouragingly. "And if I do say so on our behalf, I'm certain that a supply of fine Friendly Traveller Sake would contribute to a truly memorable event.... That you have an eye to next year's celebration speaks well of your patron's planning. I'm certain that some arrangement can be made."

He gestures the attendant back, rifles through the scrolls and picks out one that appears half-filled-out; it appears to be an inventory list of some kind.

"Next year's Ginzyoo-syu is already laid down, of course. Anything not already maturing by this point would not be something Ujikira-sama would want! The question, of course," the merchant adds, "is what proportion is already spoken for."

He makes an apologetic gesture.

"I must confess, my main purpose here is to peddle individual bottles and casks of this season's Friendly Traveller Nama-Zake to the lords who have come south to celebrate Yasuki Onodera-sama's wedding. It will be in many cases their only chance to taste the brewery's most unique variety, because it spoils so quickly that shipping it to Otosan Uchi is a chore. As such I must beg forgiveness for an incomplete knowledge of our commitments made by others. I am confident arrangements could be made so a supply can be available."

"There is a second issue - that of transport. Nanashi Mura may be a ronin town but you are still a samurai and clearly a man of culture. I cannot picture you - would find it demeaning to imagine you - struggling to drag an over-laden cart full of sake through Beiden Pass by yourself. Rather I am sure you plan to secure someone's services to transport it. Not to mention the value of the goods - I have no doubt of your skill with the blade and you have clearly, " he says, indicating Hekasu's shoulder with a nod, "the indifference to personal injury that is the mark of a true samurai. But a sizable shipment of fine sake is the sort of prize which draws criminals like bees to flowers. We know. Yasuki Taka-dono himself has sometimes remarked on the difficulty of obtaining truly reliable security for a merchant cargo outside Yasuki lands."

As noted Ginzyoo-syu is still pretty good stuff - and you're more likely to get more than if you'd asked for 'special reserve' Daiginzyoo-syu.

'I don't know how much is spoken for' is, obviously, starting to reach for a discussion on price and payment. He is dealing with a samurai, though, even if you're a ronin, so he has more taste than to talk cash money straight off.

Any suggested approach is welcomed.

I don't think Hekasu would know Aruzhan is from an artisan school.

Yoshi, Hekasu and Aruzhan have shared several conversations over meals and several day's riding, plus Hekasu has seen her craft her first meishodo talisman. With his extremely high vigilance, he can be assumed to have seen her jeweller's tools, too. That doesn't mean she know owt about brewing, but if he does want a second opinion and conversation with Soji reaches an impasse she won't be impossible to find as (presumably) he knows where she went. I'd imagine he'd have a reasonably high opinion of her skills and knowledge, since he does, after all, owe her his life...

Hekasu glances towards his injury and gives a slight nod. "The injury was as the Fortunes willed."

He nods, "Yes, transport is my second hurdle. But until I know how much I am to transport, it would be that much more difficult to arrange. Though," he glances to the other merchants inspecting the stalls, "is there somewhere else I should inquire? In Friendly Traveler Village, perhaps, would they be more able to project the available supply?"

" How much are you seeking to secure, Samurai-sama ?" Soji asks.

You've got what seems to be a pretty senior member of the friendly traveller sake company here, even if he is technically a peasant.

" The available supply " is much like the infamous " the daimyo is not at home, please try tomorrow ." - it's not yes, neither is it no, and you'd probably get the same answer even if you went to the other end of Yasuki lands.... If you look at the 'master register' in Friendly Traveller village, you still don't know what Taka and Soji might be agreeing and with whom if they're not there: it's essentially an unsolvable calculation, short of someone influential promising you your share regardless.

The only way to get a complete picture of the supply is to wait for every order to be collated, at which point the answer is almost certainly 'no'.

Essentially it's a holding response whilst he waits on how you're going to pay (or what, being a Samurai, Ujikira is offering instead of paying)

As Aruzhan makes her way back from the shrine, there is a slight hubbub as a clearly distraught heimin is trying to attract some sort of help or assistance from one of the priests, who is attempting to dismiss him with an incredulous look on her face.

Seeing the Unicorn, the heimin looks across with a pleading look.

Aruzhan briefly considers ignoring the heimin as well.. She looks at the priest, at first just hoping that the priest will eventually decide to stop doing what's acceptable, and finally do what's right. However Aruzhan is not well disposed to waiting a long time for others to act, so she tries to over-hear what the heimin is saying without appearing as if she's listening. (not wanting to risk shaming the priest for not listening, nor showing that the situation might be upsetting her.)

The Unicorn-born ronin catches the tail end of the priest's response.

From the context, it seems the heimin is apparently a servant at a house nearby, and was trying to report a robbery of some kind - though it makes little sense he would be reporting it to a samurai-born priest from outside Uimi Mura rather than to the village leader or a local doshin.

Glancing around, does Aruzhan see Doshin nearby?

Aruzhan approaches the priest politely. "Please pardon my intrusion, I understand you have many duties here at the shrine that demand your attention. I wonder if perhaps there is something I could do to help resolve this situation?"

The priest bows in a perfunctory manner and gives the ronin a long-suffering look.

" Apparently the Kami of the rivers themselves are manifesting and walking the land in the form of gigantic gostly samurai astride a beast resembling a horse made of smoke and flame...and having undertaken such a miracle, apparently their divine purpose is to indulge in some minor acts of burglary. "

She shrugs.

" Truly mysterious are the ways of the Kami. I, for example, find it an unusual coincidence that spirits are so often seen abroad by heimin labourers and servants in the afternoon and evening following a household broaching a barrel of sake for 'First Cloud '...."

The heimin's eyes are downcast through the exchange, but he shifts anxiously from foot to foot, and whilst he can hardly contradict the priest, Aruzhan can see him bridle slightly at the implication. In fairness, he doesn't appear drunk.

not in the immediate vicinity but they won't be hard to find. It's a big market/festival, there'll be law enforcement somewhere. But you'll have to go find them (and presumably drag the peasant along with you)

She may be slightly put off by the priest's inclination, but Aruzhan slightly smiles. "Ah. I understand. It's a pity that your duties here must keep you from witnessing such a miracle." At this point she's trying to excuse what she believes may be a lack of compassion on the priest's part, by noting that this is probably a very busy time for her even without looking into this Heimin's claims. "Still I have travelled all this way to learn about the Kami in this area and so I would very much like to see this for myself." For the first time the Shugenja looks directly at the Heimin. "show me the way."

The heimin bows very low, gestures roughly to the south, and says " Of course. Follow me, Asahina-sama ."

He leads the ronin off through the market southward through the light evening rain.

Aruzhan - since he's probably not looked at you properly before you walked up, and not looked above your waist since you did, the only family mob he'll have seen is your jeweller's kit...

Hekasu - call it a TN1 commerce check to pick up what Soji's hinting at

Edited by Magnus Grendel

Sorry, work has been a bit hectic with the Covid-19 stuff. I also have no idea where to go with how much could be needed, though I would

hope Hekasu got that kind of information.

Water 3/Commerce 1 (I'm assuming Water as we're discussing an Exchange? That would make the TN2 due to my wound) : [blank on skill die], [blank], Opportunity, Success.

Keeping Opportunity and Success.

Well, I was going to use the Opp of Shallow Waters to "learn one item the target wants," but that's for Social rolls. So, I'll just reduce strife by 2: 3/8.

1 success v TN2 = Fail.

sorry -was actually thinking air to scrutinise what was said, but water works too. Under the circumstances I'll let you use

Shallow Waters if you tick the strife back up.

Quantity-wise, I'm assuming 'as much as you can get' but a big (person-sized) barrel or equivalent would be ideal... For it to be for a town-wide festival you'd need that much to matter.

Soji is a merchant but one used to dealing with samurai who 'never' talk money. Plus it's not like you were sent with a bag of gold or a banker's details. So he'd have slipped a hint into his matter. One subject was a bit noticeably lampshaded:

Hmm.. that's not good. I feel like Aruzhan should be insulted that her clan was misidentified.. or, for that matter, that someone assigned her a clan at all. On the other hand, it's probably at least slightly her fault for only showing the Asahina mon and as she was raised to be compassionate she would want to correct the Heimin without getting him in trouble or embarrassing herself. I feel like she should gain some strife just for allowing the situation to arise in the first place. Perhaps a Courtesy+ void role could help in drawing the Heimin's attention to his mistake without causing too much of a fuss?

sounds fair enough - though I'd say either sentiment or command at TN1: it is a peasant after all. Frankly, the odds of him recognising a non-crab family mon at all have to be pretty low, and quite possibly only the fact that the Asahina and Daidoji lands are immediately across the border meant he knew the mon.

"Let's see," Hekasu replied with a nod, idly rubbing his injured shoulder. "I know the Dojo of the Eye would be most interested in helping to secure a rare vintage. I think half a cask could suffice for them. Then of course we would want to ensure that all celebrants at Ujikira-sama's sake house could sample it. A full cask should do well enough, then."

I'm taking that as Soji wants me to arrange a guard for it.

Void + Sentiment. My white dice come up 1 blank and 1 explosive success. My skill die come up an exploding success with strife. Since I only need 1 success, I'll opt to keep only the exploding success, the second die comes up blank. I get 1 success.

Aruzhan adjusts her attire such that the Asahina mon on her jewelry set isn't immediately apparent. "Tell me, did you see these giant samurai rise from the nearby rivers? You know air spirits can be quite mischievous themselves."

" Himari-san, the housekeeper, got a better look at it, Samurai-sama ." The heimin responds, head bobbing up and down in a half-bow as he leads the ronin through the market. Combined with a slight unsteadiness on the bamboo matting covering the mud, the overall effect is slightly comical, like a distracted seabird waddling along the ground.

" I only saw it from a distance but it was terrifying enough! Made of smoke and Jade light, it was, under the eaves of the willow tree outside the Master's gardens. Please don't think me a coward, Samurai-sama, but I took one look and ran and hid in the woodshed! "

The heimin shivers, raindrops shaking off short-cropped hair.

" Once we realised it had taken Master Aoi-sama's new treasure, we...I...." He swallows. "We - that is, I and Eiji-san, the gardener, followed it's tracks. We were scared, but...well...Master Aoi-sama is a good master but he'd surely be angry if we did nothing. He's due home any time now and finding his collection ransacked whilst we just sat there? So, anyway, we followed as quietly as we could. There's a ruined shrine about half a mile into the woods - the spirit had risen from the river, galloped - forcefully - up the bank, tearing chunks out of the clay, ridden to Master Aoi's house, taken what it came for, ridden to the shrine, and just burst into a flood of water, disappearing back into whatever spirit world it came from !"

" Indeed ?" Says Soji. " I've heard many striking things about both the skill and honour - I hope you will pardon the implication, Samurai-sama, but there are ronin and there are ronin - of the Eyes of Nanashi. I count it fortunate, given what I understand to be an inflexible code, that the Crab, Lion and Dragon maintain friendly relations. Is the Samurai-sama sure half a cask would be sufficient for such a group? ."

Okay, the Dojo of the Eye isn't

that famous. So either Soji is really well-informed about Rokugan generally - not impossible if he's one of Taka's chief hench-salesmen but still unlikely - or he genuinely has been researching ronin otokodate groups before he spoke to you.

'Selling' a cask for the price of having the 'buyer' protect its delivery doesn't get friendly traveller anything. But what Soji said earlier is that the Yasuki have had trouble too .

Getting a foot in the door for a preferential rate with a respected otokodate to protect their shipments once they're somewhere the Yasuki can't use their own soldiers as guards? That's something he wants. What he doesn't yet know is how much influence Hekasu has with the Eyes.

Aruzhan - TN1 air/sentiment will let you evaluate the peasant's story.

Given the background I created, I would say his influence is slim to nil. Especially nowhere good enough to get them to hump it across Rokugan to a distant clan at a bargain rate. I've gotta consider how Hekasu would respond.

well, I can think of a few suggestions:

  1. Lie your backside off and hope you're a better liar than Soji is a judge of potential customers. Risks failing your mission if not believed and irking the Yasuki at you personally if you are.
  2. Hekasu doesn't have enormous influence (he is an accredited student of the Dojo of the Eye but his ability to speak for the otokodate pretty much ends there). Ujikira, however, is a lot more influential. That depends on whether Hekasu is happy to pledge Ujikira's support without consulting his patron....it's a smaller lie and hence a more credible bluff (and might well not be one at all - if you were able to speal to Ujikira he might well support you), but one that could land you in much deeper waters at home if you get caught out.
  3. Find an alternative source of payment. The most easily accessed being either tournament prizes (surely some of them are for gold or artisan items) or tricking Suio Bakin into helping you (hopefully temporarily) 'borrow' some of Ito Sora's funds.
  4. Find an alternative source of trustworthy mercenaries. You know several, yourself included. You'd have to find something they want in turn, and you might find yourself playing the 'Bigger, Better' trading game, but that at least kicks the problem down the road.
  5. Find some way of sweetening the deal for the Eyes of Nanashi so you can be confident they'll accept without having to ask them. This doesn't necessarily have to come from Soji.
  6. Find someone attending First Cloud able to speak for (using suitable authority) or with (by presumably supernatural means) the otokodate' s leadership.
  7. Decapitate Soji and take a cask without asking (technically allowed but probably a bad idea...)
  8. ???

Air + Sentiment.. I guess it's a good thing I just bought sentiment. My ring die is success with strife. My skill die is blank. I keep 1 success with strife.

The heimin seems to be telling the truth (or at least, Aruzhan corrects herself, the truth as he perceived it).

The peasant - who Aruzhan learns is called Yoshika - is officially the doorman and unofficially the general dogsbody of Hiruma Aoi's half-dozen heimin staff, and as the lowest ranking of them was sent with vague instructions from the housekeeper to " get someone ". Himari apparently has no better idea what to make of it than anyone else at the villa, but fell back on a basic heimin practicality - when something mystical, dangerous or both occurs, find a samurai and try to 'delegate upwards'.

Given your - extremely - high vigilance, I'm not going to make Hekasu roll. You notice a heimin you don't recognise (but fairly well-dressed, suggesting a servant of so e kind) leading Aruzhan South out of the market. Her expression sits partway between intrigued and worried.

Aruzhan; on your way through the market you notice Kenshin and Yoshi outside the 'inn' where Hayai and the rest of Arban's guards are loitering, if you want to collar them.

"If by 'cask' you do mean one of these large barrels that when empty can serve as baths for two - three if they like each other very much - then yes, I feel that should be plenty. Certainly Ujikira-sama is well-acquainted with the Eyes, far more than myself. I believe he would recognize the favor of an agreeable rate with a similar recommendation."

Hekasu pauses for a second, then continues. "I will inquire about what type of escort I could arrange for shipping and return tomorrow, if that will do, Soji-sama?"

Certainly not gonna lie. Despite the enormous honor hit Hekasu took earlier, honor is still his jam. That said, he'll do the most within his authority to give the guarantees Soji is looking for. And he's trying to wrap it up to see what has drawn his companion's concern.

"wait." Aruzhan demands of the Heimin as she approaches the men outside the inn.

The lavender haired shugenja bows politely as she approaches the men, the jewelry in her hair scintillating as she does so. "Yoshi no-Kaze-san, Kenshin-san. Something has come to my attention which may require some assistance." She motions back toward the Heimin. "This man is taking me to investigate the scene and time may be of the essence."

The other two ronin move to follow, Yoshi asking what has happened. Kenshin dismisses a crane courier who had evidently been waiting with another letter.

Soji smiles and waves a hand expansively. " My intent has never been to pressure a potential customer, Samurai-sama. I will still be here tomorrow - or if I am called away unavoidably, I will ensure you are expected. Please, enjoy your evening, and we can continue any discussions tomorrow ."

where were you going to inquire?
