Red Castle's gallery (updated 06/08/20 Iden and Dio)

By Red Castle, in Painting

I decided to post some pictures of my Legion miniatures. I tried to take the best pictures I could, but I'm no professional!

Glory to the Empire!

First, the grunts:

Holy crap, these are amazing! I especially love your Krennic, his face is exceptional. Can you tell me how you did his tunic and cloak? Did you just do a build up from light grey or did you use any special techniques?

Thanks! Glad you like them!

For Krennic white clothing, I started by priming him with GW Corax White, then did a wash with Reapers Cloudy Gray (can't really say the ratio, consistency should be close to an ink) and then highlighted with Citadel White Scar going with multiple layer (ratio around 1:1, just liquid enough so that the paint is not too thick). Then once finished, I did a wash with a highly dilluted Citadel White Scar to help blend the colors together.

I agree, Krennic is awesome! Describe your eye painting technique please. Eyes are hard!

Thanks! I must say, the Krennic sculpt is really well done (FFG is getting better and better with each wave), so it helps to make the miniature look good. Kudos to FFG on this one!

For the eyes, it's actually quite simple. I start by painting the iris (usually just a black dot at this scale), then I apply a very little white dot on each side. The only difficult part is not to shake my hand. Sometimes I will do a fine little black line on top of the eye, but I never had to do it with FFG miniatures. Withe some miniatures, I'll start by painting a thin white line, then I'll paint the iris over in the middle.

The error that I often see with miniature eyes is painting too much white, it usually makes them look like the eyes of your avatar. The important part is to not have white over and under your iris, just on the sides.

**** this is some of the best painting I’ve seen.

Me: *sees people’s miniatures online*. “I’ll never be this good!”

also me: *splatters some weird combination of colours on to badly primed plastic* “I’m the best!”

Wow man! Thanks a lot! It's pretty much just time and practice, you should see the first miniatures I painted... :P

As for the Deathtrooper, I decided to try a different approach with them, since they're 99.9% black and have good details.

I started by priming them with Citadel Chaos Black. Then I covered them with Citadel Nuln Oil (not sure if it was useful or not...)

I then proceeded to drybrush with grey, going lighter and lighter and covering less and less. First coat was with Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey+Black (about 1:1), Then Mechanicus Standard Grey, Then Mechanicus Standard Grey+Reapers Cloudy Gray (about 1:1), Then Reapers Cloudy Gray, finally Reapers Cloudy Gray with some Citadel Celestra Grey.

Once this was done, I did a light wash Citadel Nuln Oil to start blending the colors.

Then I did another light drybrysh with Reapers Cloudy Gray.

Finally, I used Nuln Oil again to blend it together and proceeded to do multiple layer of Nuln Oil in the shadowed part to add some contrast.

So, when I paint miniatures I usually end by doing the highlights, but in the case of the Deathtrooper I finished by doing the shadows.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! It seems the default approach is to prime black and drybrush on greys.

Great work all around!

It’s certainly the fastest way with all those details.

I could have went by layers like I usually do, and I’m sure the result would have been better in the end, but since I’m a slow painter and we would not really see the difference once on the table, I decided to just drybrush the highlights and then going by layers with the shadow instead.

Wow. The models and terrain all look fantastic.

Had time to paint the astromech today... just in time for the release of the tank!

He looks great! Is he going to have something to do with the tank?

Thanks!

Just repair it when needed. I think it could be a good idea to have a squad of Stormtrooper escorting the tank using it as cover. Might as well repair it as they move.

Awesome paint apps mate.

Really nice painting there! Krennic looks super sick!

Definely my favorite of the bunch... with Boba a close second simply because he’s not black or white like the rest! :P
