Specific Minis?

By SpiderMana, in Rules

Do Troops need to be comprised of specifically the 4-6 minis that they originally came with?

The example I’m particularly curious about, can I make a squad of generic Rebel Troopers using all Duros miniatures? If one of them is distinct enough could they even fill the role of Squad Leader? If you were to give them the appropriate weapon somehow could you use one as a heavy/special weapon trooper?

I didn’t notice anything reading through the rules and reference, but I’d guess this is all answered somewhere already, so feel free to point me there! Thanks!

when it comes to modifying your minis FFG is kinda loose on this. as long as both you and your opponent knows that the minis used represents the unit then you should be okay but always check with a T.O. before any tournament.

Oh, dope! That is way better than the answer I expected! 😂

They wrote up about this, more or less its mainly what azeronbloodmoone said; reason being is if a rule criminal use's scout troopers in replace of stormtrooper unit, the opponent legit may think they are a scout trooper unit with all keywords and such. However in fact they are stormtroopers, which for common sense reasons gets very confusing, and in a way is a newer form of cheating. If allowed they will actually claim and use the unit as scout troopers, unless at that time you are mindful enough to catch it.

When it comes down to it, overall just paint the unit it actually is differently. Whether legit or not, all this nonsense adds to cheating as it becomes considered accepted. Personally, I don't care any excuse anyone would ever claim, I don't agree with it. The unit should be what comes in the package, beyond that starts dipping into allowing cheaters to confuse their opponents with seemingly literally any unit they want to claim as a substitute whatever actually is the unit. When it comes down to it just don't, as it doesn't make any sense and helps cheaters find a way of cheating.

In my example, however, I’d be using the Duros troopers to fill out the rest of the regular Rebel Troopers. Taking one mini from the squad its already in and making the whole squad look more like him. I’m not talking making use of the Duros head/mini as a SF unit or anything like that, as yes, that would be confusing.

I think the document you want to look at is the Tournament Regulations (you can download it from the same page as the RRG).

Basically, as long as you’re not doing anything that confuses your opponent as to which units you have you should be fine. If you buy 5 boxes of Rebel Troopers and you mix-and-match the minis between those units, that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m sure many people are doing this by accident as well over time, haha. The unit leader and any heavy weapons need to be clear, though.

Cool cool. I glanced through the tournament regulations and didn’t see it offhand, but I will look again, thanks.

Finding a way to attach the (or a) duros head to the squad leader body would fix your problem, because that is the one from which everything is measured.

You can put the Z6 on a duros body easy. Check my post (Permit Painting) in the painting forum for an example.

I figured I’d look into that once I actually start obtaining the minis, yeah.

Thanks! I’ll look into that.
