Sure but they also don't want to throw their lives away needlessly.

Not needlessly, but when they do get into a fight, are they going to back down when the fight is too tough? Especially if it's an important fight, they'd be pretty likely to sacrifice their lives so their friends can finish it/run away to fight another day/do whatever needs to be done.

It's how slayers are used in WFB, right? Charge the big monster and die, slowing it down for a few turns that it would otherwise have spent rampaging through your elite units.

And I fail to see why they would be acting any differently in the RPG beyond a player not getting into the role. That's exactly what they should be doing. Charging the big bad, probably slaughtering a few minions on the way. Retreating from battle is probably going to be a forced act by the other players.

How? How are you going to force a slayer to retreat? Some campaigns require a careful approach, avoiding conflict with the big bad, and sometimes putting an axe in his head before you've gathered the required evidence or done a lot of legwork can get you into a lot of trouble. How will a slayer feel about namby-pambying about the real problem, not confronting it head-on, and allowing the bad guy to continue any longer than required? He's not going to barter and negotiate about issues he considers a mater of honour.

Don't forget: his goal is not to live to fight another day, to handle matters discreetly, nor even to kill the monster and take the loot. His goal is to regain his honor, and to do that, he must die an honorable death. Not a needless death (because there's no honor in just throwing your life away), but he will stay and defend a village against a horde of beastmen if that buys even a single villager enough time to flee.

The Slayer is also not going to willingly kill himself if he knows it's going to get his companions killed also. They are trying to redeem their honor in death. If them taking the better part of valor means saving lives they will. They'll then probably storm back at the first possible chance once everyone is self. But they aren't going to **** the rest just to die.
