Minions and Adversaries

By Avatar111, in Houserules

Just leaving that here;

Anybody is interested in sharing "npc" stat blocks ?
Maybe we can come up with an easy format build a bank of adversaries and minions, not unlike Star Wars and Genesys "adversaries deck".

I find these useful for quick reference and I feel current L5R doesn't make it easy on the GM to pull out stat blocks on the fly. There are only a few in the main book, and the ones in Emerald Empire are all over the place.

Cool? Might interest other people too?

That would be super cool as a resource!

What I wanted to toy with - but do not have enough technical expertise - is to have a tool that lets you select a NPC archetype, slap a template and churns out a neat stat block on demand. If you ever see something like that...

Yeah, that is where I'm stuck 😕 I can't make a template with the forums. This requires skills I don't have to make this an online resource somehow.

I can do art and graphic design for the templates. If needed. I can probably knock off the exact template look of the core book with photoshop. But that's about it.

It's probably not a bad idea to have an index of NPCs somewhere (accepting there will be spoilers), just so people know what's available where, even if they don't have the full stats.

Using the sorting method in the Core Rulebook, a list of all the 'official' NPCs I can see (I ought to go back and gather up stuff like challenge ratings, but will do that later)

Note that duplicates of the generic NPC are usually but not always duplicates. The Loyal Bushi in the Core rulebook carries a sword and bow, for example, whilst their beginner book counterpart is armed with a Naginata. Equally, the Bandits in In The Palace Of The Emerald Champion are armed with Slings, a weapon which (currently) appears nowhere else in the game.

SPOILERS.

(OBVIOUSLY)

That would be super cool as a resource!

What I wanted to toy with - but do not have enough technical expertise - is to have a tool that lets you select a NPC archetype, slap a template and churns out a neat stat block on demand. If you ever see something like that...

When a template is added to the archetype, do the secondary stats change?

i.e. the basic Scholarly Shugenja has Endurance 10 and Composure 12. These do not seem to be calculated normally from Rings as he has 3s all round.

If we add the Sage template to him, he gets Earth +1

Does Scholarly Shugenja now have Endurance 12 and Composure 14? Or does he just roll more when he rolls from Earth and keep the same Endurance 10 and Composure 12 as before?

Do what you feel like. It isn't explained in the rules.

best answer for all your questions concerning this unfinished product.

That's an interesting question.

Looking at the Beta Rulebook, Page 190, NPCs:

Quote

Derived Attributes: Each NPC has a set of attributes, just as a player character does (see Derived Attributes, on page 21). Note that NPC attribute values are assigned as needed to create appropriate opposition, rather than being derived from their ring values.

That last sentance (which would imply "no" - if the attributes aren't linked directly to rings, modifying the rings wouldn't change the attributes) was removed in the final production version of the rules. I'm not sure why.

However , quite a few NPCs still have attributes which don't line up directly with their rings (the Deadly Bloodspeaker's Earth 6, Water 4, Fire 4, for example, doesn't match an Endurance 18 and Composure 16, and the Venerable Provincial Daimyo also should have identical Endurance and Composure and doesn't.).

So I would still say no.

Good point Avatar and Grendel, no use sweating over a couple of Endurance points here or there! Makes sense that the secondary stats of adversaries and creatures should be assigned rather than calculated.

Question about Scholarly Shugenja (p314):

His skills are Artisan 3, Martial 0, Scholar 2, Social 3, Trade 0

Strikes me as a bit odd that he should have higher Artisan and Social skills, when he is the Scholarly Shugenja and not the Savvy Shugenja or the Arty Shugenja. These skills are identical to those of the Seasoned Courtier right before him, so I am wondering if they were copy-pasted in accidentally.

What skillset do you think would be fitting for a Scholarly Shugenja? Do you think that Artisan 1, Martial 0, Scholar 3, Social 2, Trade 0 would be more appropriate for this archetype?

Do what you feel like?

Is it a socialite shugenja? A more martial shugenja? A scholarly shugenja? A artisan/crafter shugenja? A wild/ronin shugenja?

Again, don't sweat over it. It is a bit of a tedious process to create the NPC but it isn't a broken part, you'll eventually be able to gauge your party overall capabilities and adjust accordingly.

You need high Artisan for a Shuggie for Composition and warding. You also need Martial for Meditation. So I would go Artisan 2, Martial 2, Scholar 3, Social 1, Trade 0.

This is one that might well be a typo for the reasons @Miwt notes. It's also one which varies from appearance to appearance:

  1. Scholarly Shujenga (Core Rulebook, Page 315) - Artisan 3, Martial 0, Scholar 2, Social 3, Trade 0
  2. Scholarly Shujenga (Beginner Box, Page 45) - Artisan 1, Martial 1, Scholar 3, Social 1, Trade 0
  3. Scholarly Shujenga (Beta Rulebook, Page 198) - Scholar 3, Social 2 or Artisan 2, Marital 1

as noted by @Avatar111 , use whichever version fits the character you want (or create your own), but I would agree that Scholar 3 makes far more sense if you plan on having them be competent at invocations.

(It's not the only difference - version 1 also has a higher void ring, for example)

Agreed, but this is, to be fair, an NPC. It's comparatively rarer that you'd be doing "did they do their background preparation" checks than you would for a PC. I'm not saying you would never be making a check for them to prepare a ward, but a lot of the time, I would assume that would just be assumed to have happened sucessfully off-camera.

I think @Avatar111 and @ Franwax expressed some interest in a tool to make NPCs quickly and easily. I have put together a few lines of javascript that I'm going to use to track NPCs, NPC stances in skirmishes, maybe even generate semi-random NPCs on the fly. I made it for myself, but if it can be useful to others that is a bonus.

To use, download all files in the directory to the same folder then open 'GMScreen' in chrome. I have not tested in other browsers.

It is not completely finished yet, still in a beta state, I still need to iron out a few issues with the Animal and Creature archetypes. If you find bugs, or if something does not seem to be working correctly, it would be very kind if you could please take a screenshot of the screen, then press CTRL+Shift+i and take a screenshot of that screen too, and send the screenshots to me, so that I can find and fix the bug.

The NPC builder lets you select archetypes from a preloaded set, based on the archetypes in the Core Book. For human NPCs, a template (based on the templates in the Core book) can be applied that modifies rings and skills and adds advantages and disadvantages, then a clan and school can be chosen which add a ring increase and add some more advantages and disadvantages. Hit ‘save NPC’ and look in the library for that character. Hit ‘add to skirmish’ to add the NPC to the ‘skirmish tracker’.

Wow that is the sound of a dream come true ! Happy to test it; let me know when the link is available.

Thanks a lot indeed.

So far it is really good! So far I don't seem to be able to add NPC's to library, which is a shame, however it could be on my end. Anyway, I hope you keep at it! It has so much potential!

Thanks for letting me know!!

If you build it in the npc builder, then hit save, it should (theoretically!) show up in the library.

Could you hit ctrl + shift + j then take a screenshot of the console messages, i will try to identify and fix. :)

Here you go! Good luck!
'Orihime' was in the name slot on the NPC I was trying to save.

Hi CalmEyE, thanks for the screenshot!

With the NPC saving issue, please try redownloading the data, javascript, GMScreen html file, and style files and putting them in the same directory. I can’t see why it shouldn’t save, it looks like it is having trouble initialising an object so I have tried rephrasing the javascript slightly in case that helps!

If that does not help, as a second resort, try entering “npc={}” (without quotes) into the console. Just below where the error messages you showed me were, there should be a little arrow pointing right – put the cursor just after the arrow and enter “npc={}” then try hitting the save button again. Let me know if either of these things works or if it is still not doing it!

The names are randomly generated, if you click on the word ‘Name’ it will generate a new name.

Looks like there is a second issue with the fonts not loading. There are two fonts that need to be in the same directory as the main files – both come from the google drive I linked to – which will allow the symbols for things like successes and opportunities to display properly.

Of course! Hoping to help make a good idea even better!

I redownloaded everything, but did not get any font files. Are you sure they are in the same folder on the drive? Because as far as I can see they are not visible. r5XqD3p.png

I also used the npc={} method and managed to save an NPC. When I then cleared it, I got a new error message.

ZoXJgeO.png

I can add that I am on a Mac (if that helps).

I can try it on a PC in a few hours and see if I can replicate the same errors.

I didn't put the font files in the folder *facepalm*

Should look a bit nicer and have fewer cryptic random letters hanging around with the fonts available.

Not sure why the errors are happening, I tried on a friend's computer too and it worked normally... I'll have a look in the morning and maybe figure it out.

Thanks for all your help CalmEyE - I really appreciate it. Can you tell me which options were selected when it gave the error? Which archetype, template, clan and school were used?

I'll take time to check it too. Just give me some time :D

Hi @CalmEyE , I had a look and I think I fixed the issues you found - they arose because I hadn't tested properly whether everything worked when there was no existing save - thanks for finding that issue so I could resolve it. Should work ok now! If not, please make a screenshot (again!) and I'll have a look at it. :)

@Avatar111 it was initially supposed to be just a skirmish tracker to keep track of initiative and enemy stances easily, but I added features that should make it generate fairly varied and hopefully flavourful NPCs with a minimum of clicks. It only goes up to rank 3 samurai at the moment, because I wanted to have more actual play experience with the ruleset before making up stats/skill ranks for rank 4 or 5 npcs as I don't really know what the stats of an average rank 4 should look like - but my group's pcs are going to start at rank 1 so I shouldn't need to have stats for any rank 4+ npcs for a while yet. I believe you have done a fair bit of GMing of this edition Avatar111, do you think the rank 2 and 3 samurai options would present a fair challenge level for a party of pcs of the same rank - assuming equal numbers of combatants?

It really depends on your players.

Not every character fights equally in this game. A rank3 could be really good or a rank3 could be nearly useless...
