Fate/Fortune Points

Dudes,

So back in 2nd edition there as this cool mechanic where when your character was supposed to die you could permanantly spend a fate point to avoid narrowly avoid death. When you had no more points to permanantly spend your luck had run out and you were toast. It gave players a chance to die without really dying and i quite enjoyed that.

Does anyone have any ideas for implementing a system like this into 3rd edition?

The reason i ask i just finished up a session where the PCs ventured into a converted "Lure of Liche Lord" scenario from 2nd edition and managed to get all but two of the party killed in some horrible trap pit of spikey poison dart skeletal death. Now everyone enjoyed the sequence and was glad to see their characters come to a horrible and entertaining death but i came to realize that you only get one shot with your characters in 3rd edition. (which is cool, dont get me wrong) but it does seem awfuly easy to die in this edition (which again is awesome, but... developing characters is fun too with the fear of always dying being preferable).

Thoughts on prolonging life while maintaining the vulnerability and skirting near death functions from 2nd edition?

Game on!

There are fortune points in this game. You get 3 of them and they refresh each session. I suppose, if you wanted, you could permanently reduce the number of available fortune points and treat the expenditure as if it were a 2nd edition Fate Point. If you adopted this as a house rule, you could even award a permanent fortune point (up to a maximum of 3 for example) at the end of chapters. V3 is pretty flexible like that.
