Change of Plans effect on Standing Orders

By Zrob314, in Rules

Scenario: I've had the good fortune to wipe out my opponents commander(s).

It's turn 5 or 6 and the only command card they have left is Standing Orders.

What happens if I play change of plans on them?

So, RAW would mean that they can't play a command card at all on the redraw and get to set no orders at all, but the rules would indicate that a battle card must be played by both sides.

Thoughts?

From page 21: "During the Command Phase, a player must play a command card, if able."

I think you've created a condition where the opponent is not able to play a command card, so they don't play anything (i.e., they don't issue any command tokens; all tokens will be drawn from the bag). This can also happen if you've defeated all of the enemy's trooper units, and they therefore don't have a commander.

I guess If I were your opponent in that case, I would play an illegal card. Then, because it is illegal, It would be replaced into "Standing Orders". But yeah, I think it needs more discussion.

Even in that case, there is the "if able" clause. Page 21:

If a player reveals an illegal command card during the
Command Phase, they replace that card with the “Standing
Orders” command card, if able .

Then I would argue that I'm replacing the card, not selecting it, so...

(I'm from Spain, I guess we argue about words in ruling very much) ?

But you must select a card to replace the illegal one ?

You're giving me flashbacks of my college roommate from Leon!

The idiom you're looking for is "you beat me." ?

This is what we thought would happen but wanted to be sure.
