Dice management

By davepaulstanley, in Rules

Ok, played several games now. One big issue for me is keeping the tempo of the game going when I have to constantly pick which dice to roll for each different unit and whether it's for an attack or to defend. Imho, it's a real flaw of the game design. I have a big pool of 2 dice packs halfway between players to pick from. This helps but it's still a pain.

How do you all manage this issue?

For myself, it has never felt like an issue. On one of the short sides of the mat, I keep a dice tower. All of the dice are next to it, attack on one side and defense on the other. It only takes a few seconds to pick up the correct number of whatever color...not any more of a flaw or distraction than finding the correct movement tool.

I should think you'll find it easier when you've played a few games using the same units so you start to memorize what dice the unit you're about to attack or defend with will need.

I never had any problem.

I own the dices form the core and one extra pack, so I have 6 dice of each type. I usually align my dice 6 white attack, 6 red attack, 6 black attack , 6 white defense, 6 red defense (and since I usually play rebels sometimes I doesn't even take the red defense out.) As you can see, I put the black ones in the middle so it separates the attack and defense ones.

I think that the custom dice is much faster than having standard dices and having to check tables or so.

I feel like the FFG custom dice model vs (e.g.) GW's 40k model is about the same. When you don't know your units you have to check something, it will slow the game down. Once you know your units it moves quickly.

Also, I keep all my dice separated. Once you memorize what dice you need and they are sorted, it only takes a second.
