To be fair, Tramp, I’m just going by what’s on screen for both. ??
I just had a revelation about the new film hate...

None taken! genuine discussion beats heated argument any day, and we all see things a bit different! Thanks for keeping it in the former.
I really hope to see more out of all the characters in Episode IX. Despite my criticisms of TLJ, I am genuinely excited for the next film.

It's made clear fairly early on she is experienced with melee combat (that metal staff isn't just a walking stick.) And as @Nytwyng pointed out, she never dominated any combat scene with the saber. She's basically just trying to brute her way with it, wild swings, etc. The only reason she didn't lose (I hesitate to call it winning) against Kylo is 1. Kylo's aforementioned injury, 2. he was holding back to re-capture her, and 3. she got a lucky hit in.

But Daddy ...!
Sorry, I just loved the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes.

On another note, I think you should check out Dungeon World, if you haven't already. It's old-school DnD fantasy but with a system that encourages cinematic storytelling and character-driven play and strong player involvement in the development of the setting.
It also comes with rules for the GM to follow that result in interesting play. That provides a lot of structure to help new GMs in creating the campaign from player input.
And there are a ton of YouTube videos and podcasts of people playing the game, including one of the creators, so it's easy to see how it can be run.
Oh aye that's just it really. If anything, they all failed pretty hard. Leia ended up spending every minute of her life in a fight that likely never ended for her, to end up in the poltical sectrum. Han inevitably would tire of a life in the lime light and would look to take up some of his older schemes. Given their fairly fiercely independ lifestyles, not too surprising really.
Hmmm I will have look at it soon as I get the free moment, been looking to listen to something to ease boredom at work. Thanks for the recommendation!

If I can give some recommendations without being pushy:
The Comic Strip AP is a series of one-on-one games told in short sessions, with "Dungeon World: Domenico Castafiel", as the name says, is one of the DW-based ones.
Spout Lore is an excellent comedy podcast barely using the system. It shows how a GM can work to create a setting even from the most ridiculous player input, and how far you can push the game.
If you want something longer, Youtube-based, look for videos by Skinnyghost/Adam Koebel, who is the co-creator of DW. He has a ton of videos up, many of which are him playing or GM-ing DW.
There's also the excellent "Campaign" podcast, and the hilarious Darths and Droids webcomic.

No one has said that anyone who disliked TLJ - or any movie - is required to enjoy it.
What has been said is that some have expressed that dislike in extreme, sometimes inappropriate and toxic ways; that some have given some reasons or asked questions that don’t seem to add up, but meanwhile (here’s the important part) they’re still allowed to dislike it .
Then there are those who didn’t care for the movie, haven’t taken part in the toxic behavior, but go out of their way to take offense if someone suggests that those who did aren’t doing anyone any favors. Often, these individuals seem to adopt an even more binary viewpoint than those who do exhibit boorish behavior.
TBH I can see why people like it - new characters/planets/species etc.. it still has all the SW elements including big, kick *** creatures... waaaaay back before social networking we disliked something for a bit and moved on. Facebosh and 'lookatmeIwannbefamouswithoutthehardwork'Tube have a LOT to answer for...necro threads are THE worst...
Honestly, whether anyone loved it or hated The Last Jedi, I truly do believe that there is an excellent foundation for a campaign. The Resistance has been dealt a mighty blow, but it still has its leaders. The task now is to rebuild, rejuvenate supply lines and convince the galaxy that all hope is not lost. To that end, they are going to have to be willing to be a bit unconventional for a while, taking on whoever they can find willing to fight for the cause. Meanwhile, a new Supreme Leader rules the First Order. The First Order had always been tyrannical, but they at least had the virtue of stability. That stability is no more.
Meanwhile, rumors abound throughout the galaxy. The Jedi, Master Luke Skywalker and a new apprentice have returned, spurring on a new generation of awakenings in the Force throughout the galaxy. There are whispers and stories of new Force sensitives appearing…as are rumors of the Knight of Ren as bloody enforcers of the new Supreme Leader.
To me, this is very fertile ground. Enough change happened between Episodes 7 and 8 that you can tell a lot of stories about what happens between 8 and 9. Plenty of people dislike the prequels, but rather enjoy the Clone Wars series so why don’t we tell our own stories?

This is the very foundation of the Play by Post campaign we're playing here .

I'm sorry to get off-topic again, but I still haven't managed to find a play-group: is PbP a good way to start out for a neophyte in general? I'm eager to play but have no RPG experience.

I don't see why not. The only "down side" with PBP games is that sessions take a lot longer to play through, since the players post what they're doing when they're online, as opposed to everyone playing at the same time and being able to react immediately. So there is more "lag time" there. On the plus side, there is a hard record of what people did or said, and, if you use a good dice roller, like Orokos.com , you also have a record of everyone's dice rolls. This keeps everything much more organized and allows players and the GM to go back and reference what's already occurred much more easily.

So when something comes along and doesn't mesh with it they end up suffering discomfort and cognitive dissonance that they can't quite articulate. You can probably also factor in basic literary criticism education being deprioritised in a lot of places meaning that a lot of people focus only on surface details as that is all they're equipped to handle.
lol Rian Johnson is that you?
Well my take on the movies, I did enjoy The Force Awakens and was kind of interested to see where they would take this new story line, but after the Last Jedi I lost interest cause I really felt the Last Jedi seemed like a movie made for the current generation of kids and all of us from the 90's and before were just forgotten when Rian Johnson decided to rewrite it. His version of star wars is not star wars to me
As of the moment because of The Last Jedi I've lost interest in this new star wars but if given the opportunity I will watch the third up coming movie for free but I will not pay for it. I also did not see solo in the movie theater but I hear it was not that bad.
Also have no desire to role-play or be in a game in this new star wars setting Disney has given us, seems really bland, but that's just me.

Meanwhile, this child of the 70s quite enjoyed it, while his 16-year-old just kinda shrugged.
Clearly, as always, mileage varies.

It's darkly humorous while also being sad at just how they can't get past their self-entitlement and grasp that they simply aren't relevant to the franchise's overall success. Kathleen Kennedy has helped make Star Wars more accessible to a broader audience, and the overly verbal toxic twits simply can't accept that Star Wars no longer belongs exclusively to them (not that it ever did in the first place).
You do realize Donovan that since Disney has released The Last Jedi they have lost almost half of the star wars fan base. That's why Solo did not do well. They are only catering to certain fan bases and that's why they lost allot of fans and lost allot of money on the last two films compared to The Force Awakens. Right now Disney is not meeting the numbers they expected from star wars because of this. Yes the youtube people have gone overboard but to ignore them is to make the same mistake Kathleen Kennedy has done and why they didn't do as well as expected on the last two movies (The Last Jedi/Solo). When you give your fan base the middle finger and do what you want to do then yes you will lose fans and money. George Lucas was able to grab the whole fan base and cater to both of them but that something Kathleen Kennedy is not doing. Also it was George Lucas that made star wars more accessible to a broader audience back when he released the Phantom menace. The only reason the numbers might come close is because ticket sales cost 3 times as much as it did then. So take the force awakens and divide how much it made by 3 and then see if it beats the numbers from the Phantom menace. So Phantom Menace (1 bil/3x cheaper to watch), The force awakens (1.9 bil/cost 3x to watch). So economy wise the older movies made more than the newer ones respective to their current economy and price.
As of right now if they release more movies as mediocre as The Last Jedi I think I'll pass (what happens when you ditch the already created story line and script for all three movies that JJ Abrams created, and create your own). The only thing going for the third movie is that JJ Abrams is filming it.

No, a movie not doing as well as others does not mean half the fanbase has disappeared. That's ridiculous. Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon without many - if any - equals, and even if the last movie in the sequel trilogy is not as successful as The Force Awakens or even The Last Jedi, to say that the fanbase "is gone" is ridiculous.
Also, @Metalghost , TLJ did extremely well at the box office. Yes, it made less than TFA, but ESB also had a drop in ticket sales compared to ANH, so that’s not really that big of an issue. Solo’s problem was primarily due to the timing of its release. It came out a mere five months after TLJ, and right before Avengers . It would likely have done much better had they waited to release it until December. The other issue it had was its budget resulting from the extensive reshoots Ron Howard has to do. This was the same problem Justice League suffered from.
Tramp, hope you don’t mind, but a minor correction:

It was released after Avengers , which did even better than projected, which did, indeed, impact Solo ’s ticket sales.

Oh, Justice League suffered from far more problems than just that one.

Do you have any actual numbers from an impartial source to back that statement up?
Or (the far more likely case) are you just basing that upon your own personal feelings about the new film, making the same arrogant presumption that the folks KungFuFerret was speaking about in that your biased view of how Star Wars as a franchise is performing?

There’s also the fact the the latest trilogy inspires passion, which is a sign it is good art.
The first 6 Star Wars movies inspired passion as well, and good art too. Not trying to take away from the latest movies. The force awakens i enjoyed it was great art and great directing, The Last Jedi though didnt inspire anything in me but boredom. The movie was mediocre at best and non inspiring unless your counting boredom.

Too bad we wont ever find out about snoke since Rian killed him off like a wuss in the second movie. I would have rather seen the movie JJ Abrams wrote instead of what Rian re-wrote.

This is nonsense. Abrams didn't write a movie. As far as we know he wrote a draft .
