Esteemed Leader and Pierce?

By Dagrinch, in Rules

Interesting discussion came up last night because of Esteemed Leader and Pierce. Commando Sniper shot Veers. Veers took the suppression and passed the hit off to a Stormtrooper via Esteemed Leader.

Esteemed Leader Says:

Quote

While you are defending, each friendly Corps Trooper Unit at Range 1 gains Guardian 1 (While a Friendly unit at range 1 is defending against a ranged attack, you may cancel up to 1 *hit* result. For each result canceled, roll 1 of your defense dice. Convert surges, then suffer 1 wound for each blank result.)

Now... The Commando Sniper has Pierce 1. The way we read the Esteemed Leader card, that doesn't mean anything and it wasted. According to the card, the hit is canceled on Veers and a normal hit is applied to the Stormtrooper to save.

Do you guys agree with that interpretation of Esteemed Leader? That passing the hit off to a Corp troop negates the Pierce abilities of the attack?

That scenario is specifically addressed in the RRG, page 41:

"The pierce x keyword can be used to cancel block (?) results on defense dice rolled by a unit using the guardian x keyword. When doing so, treat canceled block (?) results as blank results. After using pierce x in this way, any unused pierce x value can still be used to cancel block (?) results rolled by the defender."

1. Pierce goes against the leader as normal as per the rules.

2. Now any wounds suffered by the leader trigger any Guardian effects.

Not quite. Guardian takes place during Modify Attack Dice (step 6). Pierce takes place during Modify Defense Dice (step 8).

Lemmiwinks has the relevant passage. Pierce can be used against the Guardian defense dice.

Thanks guys.

We just looked in the wrong place. Pierce was the one place we didn't look for a rules update. lol
