Thoughts on Red/Blue Player Priority Choice

By AngoraDemon, in Rules

After playing through two escalation leagues with a bunch of different players, we effectively found ourselves bidding for red/blue priority choice by sacrificing grenades etc. My final games (which I won), I effectively sacrificed 8 points to make darn sure I got it. A unit with Grenades and Grappling Hooks (or scopes) just wasn't worth losing the option of gaining blue player and detirmining objective placement or choosing sides. I actually don't like this mechanic. Most of the time, the difference between players (in terms of points) is only 3-6. Quite frankly, having the choice between blue/red is worth ALOT more than that. It also, doesn't feel right. I don't think the intention of the point system was create these bidding wars, maybe it was... who knows.

I've played a lot of legion so far. I really enjoy it, but what I don't like is that having more activations in your list than your opponent is SOO strong that it's actually pushing the larger vehicles out of the competitive scene. When I add an upgraded AT-ST or Snowspeeder to my list, I have to ask myself if it's worth more than 3 units of troopers (or advanced troopers), and quite frankly given the sheer volume of terrain we are expected to play with most of the time it isn't. What I think might make more sense (rather than using just points to determine who is blue/red) give the player with the least activations the option. If both players have an equal number of activations compare the point values of the armies. If all checks fail to produce an outcome then roll a die. I think it would give us more opportunities to play larger models in a competitive environment without "gaming" the points system.

I know that some of you might disagree with me. That's fine, I just thought this was a very subtle way of addessing some of the balancing issues surrounding the points invested in larger units, the weird bidding wars that occur when list building and the power level of additional activations without changing the game to the Nth degree.

I like the idea of blue player having fewer units, but IMO that favors the Empire a bit more as their troops are more expensive.

First player and more activations have been a staple of Armada meta, Legion is no different

I don't think that's true, rebels typically runs both Luke and Leia. As time goes on your going to see heros like Solo and Boba. I still think that it's a much more balanced way to choose between blue/red. Rather than the 2-3 point differences that litter the game ATM.
