The Fires Within Story Insert

Ok, Shuichi might have just made things difficult for the Crab. I wonder if this will have an impact further down the story...

can't get the link to work q.q

Well, it is the Unicorn who get the Naga card, not the Crab.

I wonder of Kogoe was about to mention the Nezumi, but thought better of it when she realised that Tatsuo didn't know of them.

I wonder what Tatsuo and the Unicorn will do now. Considering they have a Naga as one of their cards I would assume they will continue diplomatic relations with the Naga if they can help it.

I also wonder if there will be any fallout from the Crab killing the Naga at the end. Kogoe conducted herself well, but it will probably look bad that she took off with the other Crab on Shuichi's orders when the two Naga she left with turned up dead.

Kolat Informant hosts a copy, which is linked in the Fiction Library.

A very neat story. I liked how Ms. Sauer followed up on Ms. Brennan's work. The tale shifted from a delicate encounter between clans to a delicate encounter between species. The only note I have is, there is some direct exposition on the second column of page 2 that would have been better presented as dialogue or at least as interior monologue.

I hope those Unicorn realized they needed to find the Naga and report what actually happened and why Hiruma Kogoe and her pals didn't return.

This is not a good start for the Unicorn. Me thinks they aren't as good at speak with Gaijin as they think they are.

Older daughter: "Flies have compound eyes, dad"

Od: "That guy with fly eyes probably can see really good"

Younger daughter: "That's what makes him a good fighter"

Yd: "but flies for eyes is gross-st"

Od: "You mean gross"

Yd: "Yeah that's what I said, gross-st"

Od: "No it's gross"

Yd: "Yeah that's what I said, flies for eyes is gross-st.........it also rhymes"

Me: smiles and says "I love you girls so much"

Not such a fan of this one, because it was a climax/conclusion to a story from months ago. The momentum was all but lost and the arc still not complete. Also felt awkwardly rushed at the end to get to the fight and then a cliff hanger. Not a bad piece, just a little below average to me.

You know what I didn’t like like about this fiction? The name change. One Naga went from Ishikib a l to Ishikib e l in the middle of the story and nobody said a thing?!

Wait, unless the Naga are those kind of reptiles that can change their sex at will, and when they do, they also change their name... but then, man, what a missed narrative opportunity there...

It's likely they are twins

Within the village Ishikibal is regarded as an example of bravery, intellect and a charismatic role model for the young snakelings.

The Village leader found this audacious Naga to be worthy of succeding him and lead the village toward a more peaceful and prosperous future, confident that it would be able to deal with the new disturbances stirring in their ancient forest.

They arrival of these "neighbors" was unexpected and it is doubtful how much you can trust a species that has already shown sign of hostility during their first encounter.

As such it was decided that the younger of the pair Ishikibel would escort the foreign woman(? It's hard to tell with mammals); a necessary risk so that the staus quo could be kept.

Alas their worst fears materialized and now two families are mourning their lost wihout even any corpse to return to the Graceful Mother while the traitorous barbarian has fled outside our holy forest!

Ishikibal has proven itself on many occasions and the Elders know it will repay this insult and make the Ancestors proud

There could be that, there is also the possibility that as in the old lore Naga names are as much their role in society as their identity and that most are recognized by their place in the Akasha as much as their physical presence. This is exemplified when in the middle of the second day of thunder the Qamar was killed and without missing a beat the Isha took up his spear and became the new Qamar form that moment forward.

For all we know Ishikibal is the one who guards or scouts Ishikibel is the one who escorts. New job, new name.

Or maybe it's just a typo and you guys are reading way too much into this.

There is a proud tradition in L5R lore of reading to much in to typos and misprints and giving rise to great story ideas. Why do you think the soul of the Phoenix champion is constantly being absorbed into the body of the next one as a sort of collective spiritual adviser. because they forgot to make Shiba Ujimitsu a unique and just rolled with it.

Yeah, but it’s a typo repeated a few times. Like, it’s Ishikibal the first 3 or 4 times, and then is Ishikibel another 4 or 5 times.

Reading too much? Maybe. I once “read too much” from a parentheses in O5R and predicted the death of a clan champion. It happened six months after. Coincidence? I think not!

That...sounds mildly incriminating.

pehaps the Emerald Magistrate would like to have a talk with you
