My own Lancer-class Imperial anti-starfighter frigate

By Thrawn1995, in X-Wing Epic Play

Hello!

I would like to share with you some pictures of the last huge ship that I've built. I know that a lot of people don´'t like the Lancer-class frigate, because of its general look, very different of the Imperial triangle shapes we're accostumed to. But it's a design of old, with a long reputation coming from the first Timothy Zhan's Thrawn novels, and for me that's all I need. That, and the intended use of this huge ship for an anti-starfighter purpose.

So we have X-wing miniatures, a game of starfighters, and we have huge ships for epic play. Why not this?

I know, I know... It's tooooo big! Well, that's true, in a way. It would be the same lenght as a Nebulon-B frigate. But if some of us are willing to take the Nebulon in the fray (for Imperials or for Rebels), we could take a Lancer too. And mainly when it's designed to strike the enemy starfighters.

It's a scratch built model and I'm sure that the really good specialists could make it far better than I have been able to (I haven't got with me the Kuat, Bilbringi, Fondor or Yaga Minor shipyards, for sure...). But I think it doesn't look very bad. What do you think?

Looks very good to me. Did you use The Essential Guide To Vehicles & Vessels as your starting point?

Thanks!

Yeah! That and the old Sourcebook of the Empire for the Roleplaying game. I'm a bit of a sentimental.

Oh! And here you have some pics with other ships, to get the scale (a Raider corvette, two TIE shuttles --the Lancer couldn't take bombers-- and a TK-4 Fleet Fuel Tanker --scracht built too--)

Too much size for the attached files

So I'm thinking this thing should have a base cost over 200 points but with quite a bit more hull and shields than the corvettes as well as several more of each type of slot. Maybe divide it into a fore, mid and aft so you can put the extra 7 or 8 upgrade slots and the extra 12-18 hit points on the mid section. Since its a Fighter killer and the only real anti fighter hardpoint weapon is the Quads which only have a range of 1-2, I think it should have title that costs several points but allows you to change the the range band of your hardpoints up or down by 1 to a max of range 5 and a min of range 1. Put 4 Quads on this thing with a range band of 1-3 and a couple homing missiles with with a range of 1-4 and now you got a monster.

A fully loaded Lancer should be about 300 points.

Very nice! How did you make the ship bases - the custom cardboard tile portion? For my custom huge I made it out of painted wood, yours looks much more authentic.

This is beautiful. Do you have any work-in-progress shots?

Oh, yes! Actually I was giving it a testing play with 190 points, with fore, mid and aft sections. And I have thought of a new action for huge ships: "Anti-starfighter barrage". With this action, you will be giving a special mark to three of your quads, and you will be able to act with them against starfighters with a red target lock coming from the frigate. The ship acts with the three quads against one starfighter: the player with the frigate rolls the attack dices three times and he chooses only one of them, although he spends the three energy points; the defender lose 2 in its Agility against that attack. Well, here you have the ship base (sorry that it's in European Spanish and not in English).

I will show the template in English a few later with the maneuver dials and the cards, sorry.

Thank you! I made them with strong cardboard and then I applied a printed sticker with the design I created in my computer.

Thank you! I fear that I don't, and I'm very sorry, but when building it I was so absorbed with the work that I forgot to take a lot of shots with the work-in-progress.

THIS. IS. AWESOME! I tried to commission a Lancer-class Frigate from a couple professional scratch builders and was told it’s too difficult to do without looking janky. Yours looks a little rough around the edges but definitely passes the tabletop-quality eye test. Very nice work! I have a 19-1/2 inch Nebulon-B and soon will have a 19 inch Arquitens but your ship still makes me a bit envious as I always liked the Lancer from the original Thrawn novels and the X-wing Alliance video game.

If you ever want to sell her, I call dibs.

Impressive. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Veryy nice.. I'd love to see the 'pilot cards' and such for something like that.

If you decided to produce them, how much do you think it would be?

Thank you! I'm working on the cards: three sections with a 70-60-60 squadron points.

Do you refer to produce the cards or to produce the Lancers in "my own Kuat Drive Yards"?

Producing them, for sales purposes. I am sure some folks here, would love to buy one, to add to their game.

Sure! I would love it too if I hadn't one with me already; but honestly, I'm not prepared and I haven't got nor enough time neither a money interest to make a business of this hobby. Sorry, folks. But I want to thank you for your appraisals.

Super rad. This is one of my favorite ships next to the DP20 frigate. Nice work.

Where did you get those third party epic stands from? I need one for my VCX and I really dont want to buy an epic ship to get one.

They look like Mel's Miniatures stands:

But, at that price, you might as well just find some used GR-75s on eBay, use those stands, and sell the extra stuff to get some money back.

Agreed. At 27 for a pair, its imo cheaper to buy a rebel transport (keep the xwing!)

Yes, Weisguy119 and LTuser are both right. It's from Mel's Miniatures, but it was too expensive. I bought the pair because I put a big order and then I got the shipping costs out of my way. But I think the option suggested by Weisguy119 is usually better, if you can find them.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that a stand for huge ships gets along with the VCX-100, which is the only large ship -until now- using a specific stand.

Well, here they are, the cards! I start with the fore section, of course.

Edited by Thrawn1995
I will put them 3 later, sorry.

But this is only the first step and I think it should be better to start a new post with the cards for the Lancer. Look for it.
