Restricted List Scorpion

By Soshi Saibankan, in L5R LCG: Deck Building

I got to say I do like the Restricted List!

It will shake things up in the Scorpion deckbuild quite a bit. I usually see Dragon or Crab splash. But it might open up new ways.

How will this impact splash options? Will Scorpion favor Mirumoto's Fury \ Pathfinder's Blade instead of Forged Edicts? I've previously tried to splash away from dragon but MF is just too consistently good (it's almost never a dead card).

Will this push more Fawning Diplomat \ Censure in?

Will no Charge! break \ hamper the "drop-bear" strategy?

Does this make Phoenix, Crane or Lion splash more viable?

I also think Meek Informant's value went even higher with no Policy Debate.

What do you guys think? I dont think this overly nerfs the clan, even if it does affect 3-4 auto-includes, and maybe we'll see surprising new decks emerge.

Soshi, the RL does little to impact the Scorpion deck.

If you remove Forged Edict, you can still take Policy Debate and Fury and Censure and AFwTD (the most powerful card in the game against Crab, Dragon, Lion, Unicorn) and Backhanded Compliment, and your Way of the Scorpion and a ton of Conflict characters that simply win games on their own.

If you remove Fury and go with another splash, then you happily slide Policy Debate into your deck and viola; you’re back in the driver’s seat.

And yes, Meek Informant goes up in value very nicely, as does the Magistrate. Again, there will be little if much curbing of Scorpion gaming power with the Restricted List.

At most, at the VERY most, Scorpion went down 1/4 of a notch on the ladder of L5R.

You can't play Policy Debate and Fury in the same deck.

Scorpion can't currently play Backhanded Compliment.

The list absolutely hits Scorpion harder than any other clan...which is how it should be, as they're too far ahead of the pack without it. It probably doesn't stop them still being the clan to beat, but it definitely tips a number of match-ups much closer to the other side.

I think its a good thing it doesnt nerf to oblivion ^^

Most will keep Forged Edict I believe so this changes the splash game slot.

Hinomura, your personal Scorpion deck will shrug off any loss of the cards (Forged Edict, Fury, etc) better than any other deck in the game. Honestly man, do you really have any fear of your deck dropping in the standings with the release of the Restricted List? I mean, really?

And you are absolutely correct- currently, given the rules, a Scorpion player cannot take Backhanded Compliment. That is true. Neither can a Scorpion player take both Fury and Policy Debate. That is also true. I have yet to come across any, and I honestly mean anyScorpion deck that relies on Policy Debate to secure a win, nor any competitive Scorpion deck that needs Fury to secure s win. There are plenty of weapons (court games, way of, calling in favors, I can swim, for shame, spies at court, to name a few off the top of my head) that are just easily played as soon as they get into your hand.

Heck, a newbie with Scorpion has a better chance at winning a match than the average semi-experienced player with their deck, given the ease with which the deck plays itself.

Am sorry but this Restricted List might cause some consternation during deck construction but that’s where it ends. However, I’ve ranted enough. The upcoming tournies will provide a better picture of Clan standings. Though I sincerely can’t see Scorpion being ‘harmed’ by these restrictions any more than Crab losing Policy Debate or Fury.

I had 4 of the Restricted List in my deck, 10-12/40 cards is bound to change my strategy

Without Charge! I'm looking at including 1-2x Ambush and building a shinobi deck (lol) ^^

I'm glad to get rid of Policy Debate; it was boring to see in every deck and too good to pass up as Scorpion.

Ill probably keep Forged Edict so it really opens my splash options.

Ok, I’ll bite; Please post your previous list and the current list after the Restricted List came out. Let’s see what changed so we can better approach the topic of this thread. ?

It really depends on the metagame, but Scorpion/Dragon Dropbears with TW instead of MF looks solid.

I haven't yet got the new one, and that's the beauty of it. Doing a less effective same deck is possible. I was using a slightly modified version of the «drop-bear» Pax-South winning deck (I also like Mono no Aware).

It will be less effective without Charge!, and replacing it with Ambush would reshuffle my conflict characters a bit. With that said the Scorpion part of the deck could remain pretty much the same (maybe playing with 2s or 3s of some). It's the defensive possibility with MF that changes the game. I could use my characters on the offensive a lot more and don't focus on defence that much. So for the Splash I'm either looking for something to shore up my defence (Mountain Does Not Fall / Clarity of Purpose?) or push the offensive game even harder to race for provinces (Tattooed Wanderer / Admit Defeat?) . The splash choice will go with how I want to run it onwards.

That's why I'm saying it's not that hard a nerf, but it does affect 25% of my conflict deck and will nudge my strategy if I keep the same mentality. Maybe I'm too optimistic about how this opens up different roads for the Scorpion, but I'm not saying it's broken ;)

I have a personal deck? Sweet! I thought I'd just been building decks that catch my eye and enjoying those :)

To summarize what I wrote above for LordBlunt:

Restricted List affects Scorpion more than other Clans.

That's absolutely how it should be.

Scorpion still have the strongest deck in the environment.

The list means the gap isn't as wide.

Hope that explains things better!
