Starting a melee with a vehicle

By Big Easy, in Rules

Can someone verify this for me?

It seems you can start a melee with a vehicle provided it has a melee weapon (like the AT-RT). So if you walk up to an enemy mini at range one from his unit leader (who is in contact with an objective), all the other trooper minis must move into base contact with you. This would remove the unit leader from a scoring position in some objectives. Of course the trooper unit is in a melee but not engaged and is free to move away, but this tactic could still have a big effect on late game strategy.

Also, displaced minis do not have to go into base contact with the displacing vehicle (unlike Armada)--they just have to be placed within range 1 of where they were when they got displaced--is that correct?

Correct on both counts. You don’t have to be a trooper in order to start a melee, you just need a melee weapon. Quite devious of you in that situation! ?

On the second point, you actually cannot place the mini in base contact with an enemy. Second to last bullet point on page 25.

Only the leader, anyone else is cohesion, so just range 1 of the leader.
