Which Xenos race are you itching to crush?

By peterstepon, in Deathwatch

I want to fight Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, not becasue I don't like them but becasue I do. I just leave the races I think are dumb out of my games.

I didn't say that! Curse this quoting system. [ Shakes fist impotently at uncaring world]

As to my own expectations? More on the Yu'Vath, some info on the Andranti (or remnants there of), more examples of the main staples of the Mini's game.

Well... weren´t/aren´t Adranti human civilisation? Not that it wouldn´t be bad to see more stuff about them.

They were, supposedly. Humans who, from the sounds of things, committed not only egregiuos genetic experimentation; life on Spectoris being some of their handy work, but there was something else about mechanical people if I am recalling what I read...

Tabletop-style. Pretty much how Dark Eldar armies end up being configured for tournaments in Warhammer 40k, instead of how the background paints them.

So, massive amounts of Dark Lance spam, a transport for every squad, and not a single Grotesque, Mandrake, or Hellion in sight.

Actually, I'm more leaning toward playing them straight. Some of the things that fail horribly on the tabletop would make some pretty horrifying foes in an RPG.

Aye, properly played Dark Elves would be creepy and scary as hell in the RPG.

As my favourite two TT Xenos races, I'd both like to play against and GM a game involving Eldar and Tyranids.

Been a Tyranid player since 3rd Edition rules (so about 6 - 7 years) so know just about all the fluff I need to know to have some fun purging or throwing waves of them at players.

As for Eldar, I've wanted to play Eldar in the TT for a while, I got to like them in Dawn of War (my friends hated me playing Eldar in multi because their bases would be surrounded in Webway Gates in no time), and then reading more into them in their 4th Edition codex and the Dark Heresy Creatures Anathema and Rogue Trade Core Book made me really want a game involving some Eldar.

Even my Rogue Trader game (which I haven't started yet because still looking for interested players in the area) was going to have the RT settle a new colony on a Maiden World and subsequently begin a minor war with an Eldar vanguard force.

If they include Tau rules though, add them to the list too.

Given that I'm helping introduce one of my roommates to Doctor Who, my brain has been trying to say "Have the PCs face Daleks!!!"

That is kind of what the Necrons are... In a way. Supreme beings, exterminate all other life from the galaxy... They've got some similarities.

"EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!" partido_risa.gif By Him on Earth, this is a GREAT idea! Consider it nicked gui%C3%B1o.gif .

-"Brother-Sergeant! We have enemy contact!"

- Affirmative. Describe the enemy."

-"Brother-Sergeant, they appear to be some kind of levitating trash cans..."

I really hate Tau.....time to crush them

What im gonna send my players against:

1. Genstealers (cult or in a space hulk)(I hope for full rules for Hybrid, Magus and Patriarch)

2. Eldar ( with something like doom of a lot of humas or kill the eldars so they can't trick someone else )

3. My Fluff Dark Eldar Incubi

4. maybe a Vampire (from the old rogue trader 40k book)

5. A new FFG Alien!!

Or is that "Exterminatus! Exterminatus!"?

Nids, Necrons, and Tau...

And not just stealer cults, I'd rather like it if the rules support for deathwatch support the (possible mean and evil) concept of sending a kill team into a hive ship after the norn queen. Now that would be some fun...

Although, that being said, I'm guessing Stealer Cults and some of the less galactic empire type races will be the more common foes, since nid invasions and roleplaying won't exactly mesh super well (although a nid invasion would make a hella conclusion to a campaign)

Yeah, I'd definately agree with this.

40k draws on loads of archetypes, including loads of sci fi ones, and the concept of an ancient, totally xenocidal alien race is a good, common archetype. I personally don't like Babylon 5 (I'm with Simon Pegg on that one) but the "Shadows" from that series also play to a similar archetype.

The Old Ones vs Necrons conflict is basically:-

the aliens from Von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods"/the aliens from 2001

vs

the Daleks/the Shadows from Babylon 5. .. happy.gif

I'm sorry, but I am going to have to be the dissenting voice here. I would like to see the Eldar crush humanity ;)

Heresy!!! lol, but how would you implement that into a game of Deathwatch?

Um ... I have to disagree here. The B5 Shadows are NOT, and never were, out to wipe out all other life in the galaxy. They are, rather, of the opinion that strife and conflict is the best way to root out the successor-races. They believe that strife and conflict will, through the evolutionary-process (Darwin-esque), leave the best and most capable races to inherit the galaxy. Simple survival of the fittest. And, they believe that it is their DUTY to help that process along, as one of the elder races. They have little or no interest in wiping out all other life ... otherwise, they would not have had so many other "allied" races.

This is in contrast to their arch-enemies, the Vorlons, who subscribe to the philosophy that they should take a more active role in the 'lesser' races' evolutionary process. There were NO human telepaths until the Vorlons came along, just as an example.

So, at least in my mind, your comparison is quite flawed.

Wellll ... not 100% accurate perhaps, but there are nevertheless some pretty big similarities.

Shadows - an ancient race that has fought massive wars against a specific other ancient race in the deep past, which devastated the lesser species in the Galaxy. They are now in hibernation, but beginning to awaken as at the early point of B5, they also have a buried craft on Mars. Mankind is severely threatened by these awakening horrors from the deep Galactic past, but most of mankind does not yet know it.

Could you not just change the name Shadows to Necrons there, and the craft on Mars to one of their leaders/deity's buried on Mars?

As my players haven't seen B5, I actually used bits of G'kar's early warning speeches about the Shadows for a warning about the Necrons - it fit almost without alteration.

I certainly bow to your greater knowledge of the world of Babylon 5, Sister Cat, and accept that it's not a 100% fit, but like Adam says, there are some similarities. I'm sure the Shadows concept influenced the background for the Necrons to some degree.

I have to say, I love the Necrons as a concept, so it would be interesting to see some quiescent Necron peril cropping up in the Jericho Reach...

Please forgive me if I came across as pompous. sonrojado.gif That was not my intent. I just always saw the Shadows as a metaphor for the Isstvanian faction of the Inquisition, not the "Exterminate! Exterminate! Necrons". Just my take.

@Adam: True. If you put in that light, I can see the similarity. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Again, I apologize for coming across like a jerk.

They all but made themselves extinct when they had their massive space orgy and made slaanesh, I doubt that they'd be able to unless each and every eldar morphs into Eldrad and pulls some massive space elf dickery and make, I dunno, ork-tyranid-necron hybrids decend upon terra or something.

Actually, I think I have my Deathwatch campaign worked out now, this is gonna be awesome.

Well, their philosophies are identical , except that the Shadows want to "temper in the fires of war" all of the races, while the Isstvanians are only concerned with humanity. And, I did say I thought of them as a "metaphor" for the Isstvanians, or vice versa. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Not at all, Sister Cat, it's all good! gui%C3%B1o.gif I must admit I'd only watched a few episodes of Babylon 5, so I probably wasn't on a sound footing with my metaphor! happy.gif
