Force choke and claimed objectives

By Starnate, in Rules

If my leader is killed by force choke what happens to a claimed objective?

Edited by Starnate

Per the Objective Tokens on pg. 35 of the RRG:

Quote

If a player’s unit leader with a claimed objective token
becomes panicked or is defeated, before that player
removes or moves the unit leader, they flip the objective
token to its unclaimed side and place it in base contact
with the unit leader. The objective token remains on the
battlefield where it was placed and can be claimed again
as normal.

Technically, your Unit Leader can be Force Choked regardless of how many minis are left in the unit, but since other minis are replaced with the Unit Leader mini if the Unit Leader mini is defeated, you will always have the Unit Leader mini on the table unless it is the last mini in the unit.

Force Choke is a non-leader mini.

Force Choke is a non-commander mini...

So are you saying you think it would remain claimed or not? Yes you would replace another mini in the squad with the unit leader but the RRG that you quoted says before removing the mini you flip the token over. So wouldn't that happen before the "promotion"?

This scenario can never happen. You cannot Force Choke the commander of a unit.

That is not what the card says. It says you cannot target Commanders, like Luke or Vader. Unit Leaders are not commanders. I guess if you had already lost your Commander and promoted a squad to be your Commander then you wouldn't be able to target him, but on a normal unit of troopers you could target any of the minis.

To answer this question, page 23 under Defeated:

Quote

If a unit leader is in contact with a claimed objective
token when it is defeated, before that player removes the
unit leader, they flip the objective token to its unclaimed
side and return it to base contact with the unit leader.
Then, the unit leader is removed from the battlefield
and the objective token remains where it is and can be
claimed following normal rules.

In summary, the old leader drops the token in an unclaimed state where he was, and then he is removed. And then a new unit leader is selected.

Yeah we had a game come down to this last night where we each had 2 objectives claimed. On the last activation Vader choked my leader of one of the claimed objectives. Wondering if this is a game winning move.

Was the unit leader with the claimed objective the last mini in the unit or the only mini in LoS? If not, then it could not be chosen as the target of Force Choke per the Wounds entry on pg. 47 of the RRG.

Quote

The unit leader cannot be chosen to suffer wounds
unless it is the only mini in the unit that is in line of sight
of the attack, if it is the only wounded mini in the unit,
or if it is the last mini in the unit.

2 reasons why I think the leader can be selected by Force Choke despite what you quoted:

1. Golden Rule. Whenever there is a contradiction, upgrade cards overrule the RRG.

2. That quote is a bulletpoint nested under another bulletpoint that reads "When a player's unit suffers wounds [...]". Force Choke does not assign a wound to a unit . Rather, to a mini .
